I'm sure he's a lovely chap in himself but he's just a pastiche cabaret singer aping the styles of 1960's/70's isn't he?
I know there's a huge rush towards a 're-imagining' of musical styles from that era (Duffy, Amy Winehouse and so on) but should 6Music really be falling for it? Really Mr Hawley is suited to Radio 2 isn't he? I mean that's where I'd go if I wanted to listen to Des O'Connor and that ilk.
I’m sure you’re all just trying to be ironic and inclusive but please, enough already! There are people out there doing much more interesting stuff than this warmed over dirge.
Sorry Richard but it had to be said.
Sorry this thread was intended for the inside 6Music board. I screwed up. If the host wants to move it over there please feel free.

Every time I hear that song I keep expecting it to mutate into "quando quando quando". Once you've tried it, it's very difficult to shake off again....
Well I disagree. Let's have a heated debate.
OK
Stand back everybody.

This posting has been hidden during moderation because it broke the in some way.
i'll like richard hawley too, in a lee hazlewood kind of way.
I'm not saying he's a bad musician per se, although to be honest he always sounds like he's singing with someone elses teeth in to me. But its just a style that's more suited to radio cardigan and the blue rinse brigade in my opinon.
Bet my mum likes him, which is always a bad sign.
Wow - I've been modded - for using choice terms that have recently passed without censure on these very baords.
It seems its OK to be rude to Mozo if you mean it, but if you're only pretending to mean it, that's Modicide, 1st Degree.
Mozo - I can't believe you actually reported that one. Traitor.
I've come here in the spirit of debate, but all I've had is INSULTS and PERSONAL ATTACKS and so I'm LEAVING NOW and I WON'T BE BACK!

Ah, yer will.
I like Dickie H, he maybe a pastiche crooner but there are usually top tunes within, even if they don't bang along at some BPM.
Thumbs up from myself.
Although I would probably get sick to death of him if he was over exposed.
Hang on, I never reported no one me! I've never reported anyone in my life, so whatever was modded please put it back! If it was an insult, I can take it, I'm 'ard me.
Anyway I'm still sticking to my opinion of RH. Not that I'm not a fan of crooners. I'm quite partial to a bit of Matt Munro and even some Sinatra. But Hawley's a poor imitation and there's still plenty of the originals out there still at it.
I'm also not saying that he doesn't have his place, and I'm sure there are variety type shows and senior citizens centres out there that will welcome him with open arms. Heart FM is also quite fond of that sort of thing I'm told. I just think he's out of place on 6M. Even if he is mates with good old Guy Garvey.
If 6M needs a crooner, might I suggest a real original?
Mozo - I'm disappointed that you didn't even get to see the insults. I'll post them on your Facebook page instead. Along with a crudely drawn illustration of you.
I'm not letting THESE PEOPLE [gestures vaguely] ruin what could have been a JOLLY GOOD HEATED DEBATE.
Anyway, suffice it to say - YOU'RE WRONG WRONG WRONG.
NOT
Looks like the Heated Hawley Debate is now over. Thank you to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ for providing a forum for this important issue - (viz: "Is Mozo Wrong or What?") to be aired.
Looks like you'll have to wait until I publish my book to see that modded post.
I'm thinking of giving my collected messageboard works the title: "Twixt Cup and Lip". Whaddya think?
Or "Pearls before Swine."
Or, with reference to Mozo: "The War on Error"

Is that it?
Must admit I expected more of a fight as well. I was hoping to get to at least "NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT with knobs on!"
Yeah, well talk to the moderators.

Just heard that Hawley track.
A bit Val Doonican isn't it?
My point exactly. And just to set myself in that particular musical vista, I’ll admit that the second single I ever bought in my life was Anne by Val Doonican, so I know of what I speak.
If this goes on I’m fully expecting to see a track from a Demis Roussos clone on the playlist next week. Then I suppose it’ll all be downhill till we hit the Peters and Lee back catalogue and then you'll all realise I was right all along.
So there!
Demis Roussos? He gets played regular on 6 - I heard this one week before last.
Stick with it - it builds.
But if its the real Demis then fair enough. Not just some bloke re-inventing the same style for no good reason. While we're on the subject they just played that Bat For Lashes song. I honestly don't think she could sound more like Fleetwood Mac if she sat down in the studio and listened to Rumours for 12 hours straight and then went for it.
There was a time when you wouldn't get a deal if you sounded like anyone else. These days it sometimes seems to be an advantage. Its not 'homage' its not 'influence' its a lack of an original idea being fobbed off on a generation who never heard the original stuff (which in most cases was much better) by a cynical recording industry who are never one to turn down a quick buck on the back of it.

That Vangelis geezer don't half like them blokes with the high voices don't he?

ENOUGH! In the name of scientific experiment and discovery, I have ordered "Truelove's Gutter" and I intend to put it through a number of carefully-designed tests (play at home, play in car, play on iPod on delayed train stuck in flooded field outside Stafford at dusk on Christmas Eve) before compiling my report. Now, where can I get one of they iPods?
Get a Sony, not as sexy as an Apple but much better sound quality (in my opinon).
And now we've got a clone of the Jackson 5 in The CB's and Misdemeanour. I give up!
