Could Depeche Mode's "Everything Counts" really be based on timeshare salesmen?
Is the band really named after a French fashion magazine?
Were SHAM 69 named after a torn poster which had once said HERSHAM? Did Scritti Politti miss out the "ic" they would have needed in the second part of the name to make "political writings"?
But above all, was Robert Smith "poring" over a packet of Silver Spoon at 10:15 on a Saturday night exactly 40 years ago? or so what?

"De PΓͺche Mode" was actually a French fishing magazine, published in this country as "Angling In Style".

A common misconception I'm afraid roofdog. The name is taken from the most commonly appearing number of peaches in a sequence of peaches.

Tol, I was always mightily impressed with the apparent origins of Chumbawumba's name.
The story goes that a University (in America, I think), decided to test the old theory that an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters would eventually type out the entire works of Shakespeare.
Obviously they didn't have the "infinite" supply of either type-writers or monkeys but during this "research" study almost everything that the monkeys typed was illegible rubbish. The only thing to be typed by the monkeys that was actually pronounceable was "Chumbawumba".
I so hope that this is a true story, but whether it is or not, I have retold it many times since I first heard it!

I may have read in Sounds Unlikely magazine that The Carpenters got their name from their previous jobs.
Karen and Derek (I think that was his name) were repairing the bannister at a record producer's home. They liked to sing as they worked and, upon hearing their beautiful song above the din of a power drill, the producer immediately signed them to his label.
U2 had to change their name after a threat of legal action from Boston Drag Garage rockers U1, possibly according to the same magazine.

Fleetwood Mac were so named because they all worked in the same burger bar north of Blackpool.

Stop that. It's silly!

It's a little know fact that the band Lambchop started off as a tribute act to Lamb Chop the sheep sock puppet before deciding to plough the alt-country furrow instead.

I've heard the Chambawamba (note spelling) story too, so I'm just off to wikipedia to legitimise it.
Too good a story to let the facts get in the way!
As for Des PΓͺches Mode:
The name is taken from the most commonly appearing number of peaches in a sequence of peaches.Β
Les Abricots de MΓ©dian were a bit miffed never to have got their fifteen minutes of fame, blaming EU fruit sizing regulations.
I was flabberghasted this morning to hear BjΓΆrk warbling over an advert for the Vauxhall Cavalier, mind you...shades of "We've only just begun" which was originally an advert for Crocker Bank IIRC...
