Do we do these any more round these parts? Only I've been away see, and...I'm a bit nervous of stepping out of line...and I used to enjoy them and all.

We did wine a while back. And vegetables. It's about time we had another.

We tried trousers, they've got 2 closely interwoven threads all of their own
I was thinking DIY, including painting and decorating, basic plumbing and electricals (not those that fall within revision 17 of NICEIC regualtions unless you consult a qualified electrician of course). Other minor jobs about the house could also be thrown in

Any good tips on the best way of getting rid of dark stained wood?
If you want to paint: lightly sand with 180 gs/paper to remove shine & provide a "key". Fill joints, holes and cracks and sand back smooth. Then prime with 1 coat Zinsser BIN - available from paint merchants. This will stop any knots,, prime the surface and stop the varnish colour bleeding through. Then apply 2 undercoats and the top coat of your choice.
If you want to go back to natural wood - the easiest thing to do is get the doors dipped, and rip out and replace architraves & skirtings. Unless they are particulalry special/hardwood. It's always quicker to replace mouldings than to try to strip them. Honest.
Well, you *did* ask!
Dark stained wood usually = late 80's decorating. You haven't got peach, apricot and terracotta walls as well? Champagne coloured armitage shanks bathroom suite? Brown/straw coloured tiling? And a manually controlled Honeywell thermostat in the hall? By any chance?
