John Peel (RIP 5 years ago this weekend) once said that he couldn't stand Merzbow but kept going to their gigs in case he discovered what it was that other people seemed to see in them.

Does anyone else 'not get' bands that they know, deep down inside, are actually really good?

    For me it's;
    Depeche Mode (Sorry Wife)
    AC/DC (sorry Ian of Wrabness)
    The Cure
    The Editors.

Has anyone ever gone along to a gig, expecting to hate it but came out converted. For me it was Faithless at Glastonbury.

    Happy Thursday Evening everyone.

I know this will be scandalous to many but Please dont hate me for it, here goes...Ive never liked Sonic Youth (gasps )I just thought it was very limp droning monotonous and I couldnt care less whenever Ive heard them ..... but people whom I respect for having great musical taste realy rate them, and one of them Mr Riley has just played a track Ill have to look up the track but I didnt know it was them till after and I loved it,

I went to a Groove Armarda gig Expecting to hate it and I thoughoughly hated every minuite even more than I could have ever imagined possible

I can aggree with Editors I think he has a "marmite"voice but they do write some great tunes
Faithless are realy great live act but I dont enjoy at home cd

Fist - Have they got you on messageboard Prozac or something? I'm worried. If this carries on, we'll have to go for counselling. I just can't live with you being like this. You've changed.

Mike - To spin you opening gambit around, I have to confess to being a huge Depeche Mode fan whilst deep down realising that Martin Gore can not write lyrics to save his life and a lot of their songs, (nay, albums), are utter, utter twoddle.

Despite all this, I still love them and manage to find the good in almost all that they release, ("Ultra" is the exception to the rule, I'll grant you). I stick with them year after year, album after album in the ridiculously unrealistic anticipation of an album to rival "Violator", (naff title but great album).

Reluctantly, I once had to take my wife to see Elephant John play a rather large arena gig. My opinion of him did not change.

I am completely confused by Florence and the Machine.

Listened last night to gid and on paper I should have really enjoyed the set (love Acoustic versions) but the whole thing just sounded really bad to my ears. Dont really understand the recorded stuff either.

Music is a very personal thing.

Editors are however not very good IMO.

Editors seem to be turning into a "nu-trance" (I still don't really know what that means) version of Interpol.

Sonic Youth are an interesting band. I know everyone says they are great, they are Michael Eavis's favourite band too. I've got two of their albums but never really feel like listening to them.

Quite liked Manic Street Preachers live (circa 1996) despite wanting to hate them for their Motown-light phase.

This is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel but :

    Coldplay
    Snow Patrol
    Travis

Dreary, dull, middle of the road toss. I can't see how anyone below the age of 50 should like that lot.

I tell you what I'm not "getting" at the moment - Jim Reeves. My client plays him all day at full volume. I'm going to be in that house for at least three days. I've come home for lunch just to get away from it.

Jim Reeves? When I read that I was half-expecting his song to be "Dizzy" with The Wonder Stuff... smiley - smiley

So it could be more repetitive... smiley - winkeye

I could never get Sonic Youth either.
I love scores of bands, but I could never get Bob Dylan, Captain Beefheart or the early stuff by PJ Harvey.
And I think Radiohead and Coldplay are overrated.

There is no such thing as good or bad in relation to music (or any art form for that matter).
There is just what you like and what you don't like.
So I wouldn't worry about it.
Just enjoy the music you love and stop "trying" (I know you didn't say that) to like music that just doesn't click with your brain.
There is nothing wrong with you.
    We are all different.
    Enjoy your difference.
Sometimes people praise music and bands that in reality they don't enjoy listening to anyway.
But if that is what they need to do to cope with life and feel part of society, let them get on with it.
Some music is more to be admired than actually listened to.
A lot of critics are up their own holes anyway.

You've obviously never heard that no 1 single by Hoddle and Waddle. You wouldn't be so blase about the potential for the bad - evil even - in music.

BTW, Mike - you'll probably enjoy this article, which muses along the lines of your OP.

" I guess Peel {...] was effectively asking the listener: β€œI like this (I think) and I haven’t been instructed or obliged to play it from a play list. What do you think? Is it any good?”

"Some of his choices were baffling; some were amazing, others quite awful and a typical Peel show visited all points in between. But it’s good at times to listen to music you might not like, rather than just take the aural palliative dished out by many radio stations."

Fist - Had you heard this little gem...

you might not have been so quick to label "Diamond Lights" as 'evil' as it clearly wasn't Waddle's worst recording by quite a long stretch.

Never mind your Black Metal THIS, my friend, is the music of the Devil.

It's just good to challenge yourself now and again. It's all very easy to sit back and listen to you're favourite album/artist and sometimes you need that kind of comfort but I find that I quite enjoy the discomfort of listening to something that I'm not familiar with and possibly don't like. I don't mean pop drivel or throw away stuff like some of the bands mentioned before.I mean credible musicians who have sweated blood and tears for you to listen to they're record. There is only 2 kinds of music........ good and bad.
Johnny Cash and Billy Rae Cyrus
    Public enemy and vanilla ice
    Motorhead and def leopard
    etc etc etc
Have you ever watched a David Lynch film and thought "what the hell was that all about? I don't know but it was pure magic"
It's good to listen to stuff that has the Lynch effect.

    Keep music evil!

I could never take depeche mode seriously, saw them on the synth programme on ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ4 and still feel the same.

I always used to feel I should like the smiths but they just didn't quite do it for me, though I'm coming round to them now, 30 years on.

I do like Editors, but I think it's the 80s throwback thing, I don't think they're the greatest band ever, but I enjoy all the same.

Jury's out on the fall, but the biggie that I really don't get is Radiohead. Odd track on the radio is quite nice, but beyond that, no, do not get. I'll get my coat.
