Right, right.
This won't be the first thread or the last you read about this but I think this is something well worth banging on about. I though if I started this thread now then I'd have one less thing to worry about.
Or is that one fewer thing?
Less.. must be. Anyway, here are some possibles for the best albums from Jan 2000 to Dec 2009, subject to brilliant late releases this year. And there are bound to be some more.
Some early thoughts from me
Midlake - the Trials of van Occupanther
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
The National - Boxer.
Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
And I clearly need to go away and think about this some more because all of those are American. You can suggest as many as you like, and post as many times as you like. I'm just hoping for a big long list that maybe we can work into some shows towards the end of the year.
Please don't forget that Wierd Al Yankovic released records in this decade.

hmmm...
Off the top of my head
Joe Henry - Tiny Voices
Guillemots - Through the Windowpane
Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 - Ole Tarantula
i need to dredge my memory as it's silted up with layers of memories from the mid 00s.

Damian Jurado - Ghost of David
now, what about the tricky problem of differing release dates? I'd like to nominate...
Calliope - (in)organics
but it was released in 1999 (in the USA) although it didn't hit these shores until 2000.

They did a rather good one; it's a bit like the Ramones' "Acid Eaters" - covers of influences. Some of the songs are the same, too.
Link to this forum: Easrlier than I planned, it's the album of the decade thread.
This is my list and I'm sure I'll change my mind about some as I go along and there's probably plenty more I could add as well
Gutter Twins - Saturnalia
Howling Bells – Howling Bells
Porcupine Tree – In Absentia
Skinny – Taller
Sneaker Pimps- Bloodsport
I AM X – Kiss and Swallow
Elbow – Leaders of the Free World
Jose Gonzales – Veneer
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
Satellite Party – Ultra Payloaded
Unkle – War Stories
Hummm - Rush albums from this decade! I'll have to check Myspace out for them..........

Hi Gid (and everyone else),
Inevitably, I'm going to start with The Drift by Noel Scott Engel (2006). Wouldn't it be great to hear a track off this tour de force included in your final show of the decade...
It would, though, wouldn't it? Eh?

Hi forget_hood (there has to be a play on words there that I’m just not getting), as Gideon says, since his move to the night shift, I’ve been pestering. Frankly, deadlines have been missed.
Just what is it about hearing tracks on live radio that gives you a buzz, when the album is there for constant use on your rack of vinyl, plastic or in the form of bits of data? Scott knows.
Anyway, I’ve a feeling, f_h, you’re my first - and probably only - ally in this quest. Apart from Gid, that is (although that Freak Zone crew have indicated a willingness to play And Who Shall Go To The Ball... *in its entirety*. We’ll see.).
On which track you’re going for, Mr C, Jolson and Jones almost has a chorus...

These

It's A Wonderful Life - Sparklehorse (2001)
Radio Bemba Sound System - Manu Chao (2002)
Transfiguration of Vincent - m.ward (2003)
New Roman Times - Camper Van Beethoven (2004)
KC Rules OK - King Creosote (2005)
Pirates' Gospel - Alela Diane (2006)
Raising Sand - Alison Krauss and Robert Plant (2007)
When the Haar rolls in - James Yorkston (2008)
The Sleeper - Leisure Society (2009)

Ah joy.
Just landed a job with a decent enough office space to get away with doing absolutely nothing but ponder on the greatest albums of the last 10 years.
Scary how much has happened.
Here goes...
NERD- In Search of
Foo Fighters- In your Honour
Midlake- Trials of van Occupanther
DJ Fresh- Escape from Planet Monday
MGMT- Oracular Spectacular
avvit.
Link to this forum: Easrlier than I planned, it's the album of the decade thread.
Heartwarming to see a couple of nominations here for The National, the band I seem to have been waiting for since Joy Division. My preference and number one is Boxer. Also a fan of
Whatever People Say I am....... - Arctic Monkeys
Silent Alarm - Bloc Party
Do you like rock music? - British Sea Power
The Back Room - Editors
Couture, Couture, Couture - Frausdots
(although Gid claimed last night when I mentioned this that he had not heard it!!)
Antics - Interpol
Hot Fuss - The Killers
A little mainstream in places I guess for Gideon's show but hey-ho it's just a personal thing, right?
Link to this forum: Easrlier than I planned, it's the album of the decade thread.
I would agree with many of the above, rather than repeat my favourites in the above, in terms of whats missing
Lisa Marlin, Alas I cannot swim
Eels - Blinking Lights
Are both notably absent
Plus some other stuff I have really enjoyed:
Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizons
Belle & Sebastian - Fold Your Hands Child etc
Pulp, we love life
Ben Folds and Songs For Silverman
and if we are allowed a compilation, I will take Rainer, 17 Miracles.
In the "surprisingly good" category can i have James Dean Bradfield solo album The Great Western which I thought would be a bit naff, but is perfectly decent, and to balance it up the "how on earth did they press that?" Nicky Wire solo travesty "I killed the Zeitgeist". It really is bad. As was the billy corgan trashing of the Pumpkins name also called "Zeitgeist". *shudders* I am never ever buying another record with that in the title.
Link to this forum: Easrlier than I planned, it's the album of the decade thread.
For folk music, it has to be Mary Hampton - My Mother's Children. Lovely guitar playing, unique, rivetting voice - and the lyrics are poetic and intelligent.
In fact, I think she might have done a session for the Freak Zone. May I put in a request for a repeat broadcast, one day, please?

Belle and Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003)

The Gris Gris - For the Season (2005)

Nice to see Roofdog and Fist back again.
Judging by this year's Gid-Fest, if we had a Fist-Fest, would Fist actually turn up to it? or maybe I could finally get to meet the Crowman instead.
More importantly, what would the badge look like?
My problem here is that I would like five albums from the 1970s (one of which might *not* be by Ultravox or Kraftwerk), (may I choose "Flammende Herzen" by Â鶹ԼÅÄ4 star Michael Rother? ) maybe three from the 90s, none from the Noughties and about 300 from the 80s. Speaking as the kind of bloke who recognises tracks played on the radio he only ever bought on cassette, I expect that shows my age...

Witney!
Without googling, is that the place with a central roundabout in a "bowl" with about five roads heading down into it? I remember once having a spectacular spill on a pushbike in the place I recall at about 4am...
and they probably sell "Euroview" forward-facing overtaking mirrors for RHD cars too. (If others are available, I've not seen them myself)
Link to this forum: Easrlier than I planned, it's the album of the decade thread.
It's a DOUBLE roundabout with, yes, 5 hills meeting.
There's more to Witney than that, though. It's also got a Sandwich shop with pretensions called - wait for it - "Sandwich de Witney".
Link to this forum: Easrlier than I planned, it's the album of the decade thread.
"Sandwich de Witney"? are they pretending to have links with Houston?

Hi Gideon,
my nomination for album of the decade is:
Camera Obscura - Let's get out of this country
Other notable albums of the 21st Century have been:

Is this it - The Strokes
Highly evolved - The Vines
Original pirate material - The Streets
Underachievers please try harder - Camera Obscura
Youth & young manhood - Kings of Leon
A grand don't come for free - The Streets
Hot fuss - The Killers
Take fountain - Wedding Present
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Coles Corner - Richard Hawley
Whatever people say I am - Arctic Monkeys
In Rainbows - Radiohead
Fleet foxes - Fleet foxes
Vampire weekend - Vampire weekend
Overall not a bad decade.
