Every so often one comes across a cover version of a song that works for the least expected reasons, and I was attempting to compile a list for my own amusement of such things.
Now, some of the ones I came up with aren't too far from the originals (The Delgado's Mr Blue Sky, for instance) some might have to be banned from the list as they may count as comedy covers (viz Teenage Fanclub's version of Like a Virgin.)
Other than that Ballboy's Born in the USA springs to mind, as does (perhaps controversially) Hurt by Jonny Cash.
Anyone else have any suggestions for similar covers that work despite being Wrong?

The Joan Collins Fan Club's version of "Leader of the Pack" may well be a comedy cover, but it does show up the innate silliness of the original.
"Watch out for that dirty great lorry!"

I reckon this one is an archetypal βshouldn't work but doesβ cover version.

I realised on my way home I'd forgotten the track that originally set this train of thought going:
Joy Division's Transmission, covered brilliantly by a steel band.

Lee1975 - the Lulu cover of the Bowie song reminded me of another Bowie cover, this time by Nina Persson (of the Cardigans) fronting 'A Camp'
Would never have occurred to me that she would cover this song, but I really like her version a lot!

I know I'm going to get mocked, but Susan Boyle's cover of WILD HORSES - sends the hairs up on the back of my neck each time I hear it.
