Remastered Beatles LPs are hitting the shops. It struck me that we could easily make an album (or more) of Beatles covers, some of which we might like more than the originals!
How about:
Dear Prudence - Siouxsie and the Banshees
I'm Only Sleeping - Suggs (only just realised this is a cover)
C.H.E.E.S.E.A.N.D.O.N.I.O.N.S. (oh no) - The Rutles (not a cover, but a brilliant pastiche)
Help! - Bananarama and Lananeeneenoonoo(?)
A Little Help From My Friends - Wet Wet Wet
Twist and Shout - Salt 'n' Pepa
Laibach - across the universe
Nigel and the Crosses - she said she said (alas, only available on live tapes of their Borderline gig in '89)

Ones that spring to mind include the Wedding Present's take on 'Getting Better' (from the NME tribute album Sergeant Pepper Knew My Father) The Easy Star All-Stars' new version of She's Leaving Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, a rip-roaring Lady Madonna from Kingmaker, a brassy 'Blackbird' from Jose Feliciano (he also did a great 'She Came In Through the Bathroom Window') and of course Joe Cocker's masterful 'With a Little Help from My Friends'.
Anyone know any more recent decents?

I'm lazy, but found this site -
Although William Shatners rendition of 'Lucy in the Sky' would have to be put in just because its so awful.
Only heard this version for the first time over the weekend but it's a rather good one.
Buddy Rich's version of "Norwegian Wood".
On the same programme, they also showed this version of "Help!" which I absolutely love.
They also showed this one too which is another cracking cover...
Shaun just played The Fall's version of "A Life in the Day" (Monday at say just gone 9.10).
I feel the hole saler has been choosing the Keave's records again...
Purrmeister - Have to agree with Wilson Picket's version of "Hey Jude". In fact, many moons ago, when Gid was in the morning slot, I chose that record as my 60s tune for "Hit the Decs".
It's a fact.

Maybe Gideon could get the Wilson Picket version and give it an airing? Would be good....

Just checked out the Buddy Rich version of Norwegian Wood. It'd be an excellent start to Gideons (not anyone elses) show
How do we all feel about Francis Albert's take on "Something"?
How do we all feel about Francis Albert's take on "Something"?Β
was I the only person who looked up "Fron-seece Al Bear" in "Les grands seengeurs fronsay"?
That'll teach me and no mistake!
So we're talking Frank Sinatra!
I learned something today.
I think that's a great version!
Speaking of cover versions of "Something", this version is amazingly close to the original.
Points lost however, as the bass player didn't play the Hofner left-handed. Tut! Talk about being half-hearted?

How about doing a back-back show? A Beatles song followed by another artistes version of the same song.......could be interesting
One of my favourite Beatles covers of recent times comes from a little band I love...
It's a cover of Eleanor Rigby by the lovely people who are The Outside Royalty.
This thread also reminds me of my intention to start a new one for covers that have no right at all to work, but somehow do...
(If you want to listen to it, that is.)
What about the Breeders version of "Happiness is a Warm Gun"? Never really that impressed with the original but there version is very good indeed.
scritti politti's version of she's a woman was okay.
Gid - Having now listened to it, I am not having Frank's version of "Something". It's simply awful.
Speaking of which, it's nice to hear Elvis take the time to learn the lyrics to "Lady Madonna" before meandering through a disinterested version of it at rehearsals...
The drumming's pretty decent though. I wonder if it was Ronnie Tutt?

Jimi Hendrix's version of Day Tripper (Radio 1 session one for choice).
i liked shockabilly's version of day tripper, and his version of oh yoko.
Shaun just played (Tuesday 16/9, 8.15) an Aretha Franklin version of "Let It Be".
I was going to say how surprised I was that the song lent itself to a spiritual soul style, but then I remembered that the words do mention "Mother Mary".
I have always thought at the back of my mind that a song which meant "Leave that thing alone!" was an odd title. I wonder if it means "May it be so"?

Long-forgotten indie funsters Bob ( recorded a cracking cover of Rain ( on the B-side of their Stride Up EP (
Just thought you should know.
Matt
How good is the original version of "Rain" though? Absolutely cracking but hardly ever played, which is a bit of a shame really.
Whenever I hear it I am lead to thinking that Oasis were so desperate to sound like that track... whilst never managing to achieve it.

Richie Havens cover of Strawberry Fields Forever gets my vote.
Peter Gabriel's version of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' from the 'All This & World War 2' soundtrack is excellent, but the 801 version of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is really hypnotic!
Candy Flip's "Strawberry Fields Forever" seemed to achieve the swooshing drum effects that the Beatles had been going for.
Here's a "Beatles cover versions" quiz from the Guardian...

Is Denny Laine the only musician that sounds like a Beatles song?
