Hello viewers; long-time reader, first-time user. Who do you think will be following Elbow up the red carpet to collect this year's award? A late flurry of bets for Lisa Hannigan apparently, but as a successful backer of the 1992 Grand National winner I have an inkling that Friendly Fires capture this year's zeitgeist. Anyone care to proffer an opinion?

it's supposedly not allowed to be based on live performances..

had I seen this message 10 mins ago I would have said the following:

Flo Mo has to be the favourite, surely? Name another album in the 12 with simultaneously that much diverserty AND mass appeal

However I've seen the Horrors gaining alot of Industry support and they could nip it - they are who I would have bet on.

most recently though, in the last week, I had this niggling doubt... and that doubt was been Speech Debelle. It's because her story is so much of a 'Journey', and you know how people love a stroy of triumph against the odds.

You could say I gave myself a 25% cance of getting that right! Which blatantly I did. ;p

and now the result is in, but I'm not going to be the one who posts it on the message board!

well you were right about Speech Debelle........must admit it was my preferred choice had Florence not won it, so well done. Saw her at Glastonbury but not actually listened to the album yet. Will add i9t to my shopping list for Monday....when Muse comes out also

In my cynicism I do think she's a 'worthy' winner, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. She's the kind of artist who genuinely benefits from wining after all. I mean, what would Kasabian got out of it other than fuel for already inflated egos?

Good on her. I'm not a massive fan of the material she's produced that I've heard, but she's talented, has a superb turn of phrase and the backing tracks are musically interesting, so it's ore a personall taste thing.

strange choice in my view its different from all the other artists that makes it unique but not to all purposes the best florence and bat for lashes surely have a greater potential to entertain the masses in the long run

I heard a bit of a song by Speech Debelle on the radio this morning and enjoyed it but have to admit I enjoyed it more when Arrested Development released it as "Mr Wendell".

I'm glad Speech Debelle won the award because she produced some of the most heartfelt and original music in the shortlist. Great to hear someone from a hip-hop background use that to express themselves this way rather than wittering on about how great they are.

This thread got me thinking... there were 12 artists nominated, but during the day on 6music I only heard Florence, and her 3 or 4 times.

I liked the shows devoted to previous winners and the fact it took a a decently broad view of the past, but that fact that none of Speech Therapy got played during the day (along with the other nominees) seems really rather odd, as it is great music, which should fall into 6music's remit.

Or is 6music's remit now, as Mr Peel might have put it 'just cute white kids strumming guitars'?

I've got a cynical view of Speech Debelle - her 'journey' makes her come across as an urban music version of Geraldine in a certain Peter Kay spoof!

Shouldn't Dermot O'Leary have hugged Natasha Khan?
