Can I stay can I please stay just one more, one more night!
Gid has brought this earworm back to us.
Half a minute after finishing the washing up, I was singing "I'll do all the dishes..."
And I thought I'd escaped Yellow Dog forever...
One of the great endings to a record...
Song ends... or so we think. Phone goes... and there he is again, pleading
"could I, Could I, Could I..etc
On TOTP I seem to recall DLT (look him up kids) taking said called and doing the phone-slam "No!"
thing which really does end the record.
The "NO!" is very definitely part of the record. (As you can hear from this version which misses off the beginning but keeps the end).
I knew when it was mentioned last night that I had this morning's "Earworm" and so it proved. Jumped out of bed "Can I stay can I please stay..."
Reading the lyrics as you can nowadays, it is clear it is a *woman* who is pleading to stay.
Watching it again, I can see why the histrionic talent of the lead singer with the sticky-out scarf failed to convince me he was being a woman.
In fact, the overall effect is of a "Reap the Wild Wind" period Ultravox tribute singer* from a working men's club with the long-haired hippy nephews of The Shadows behind him...
*clever, as Midge Ure must have still been in Slik or the Rich Kids at the time...
Taken from the cover by This Mortal Coil, entitled "Song to the Demob-Happy"...
One more night, just a one more night...
