Yes... sorry helpo... Yes, Second albums.

A much maligned beast the second LP, though I can never remember if it's as maligned as the third. Never mind all that though, I'm minded to do a thread on the show regarding 2nd albums. Good ones, not very good ones, underrated ones, overrated ones and, perhaps most of all,"it's alright I suppose" ones.

Second Coming... Yes, yes, yes somewhat overdue and overblown but in posession of at least 3 decent numbers I reckon. Which would make it a big itunes hit these days pop pickers

Give Em Enough Rope... Contains not only one of the great album openers but arguably Mick Jones' finest moment in Stay Free. And All the Young Punks is a wonderful - if potty-mouthed - closer.

Feel free to add/argue/just read and move off somewhere else.

    Gidx

"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"/ Neil Young -

the three key tracks remain integral to his live shows to this day - 'Cinnamon Girl', 'Down By The River', 'Cowgirl In The Sand'.

"This Year's Model" / Elvis Costello - the first album with the Attractions.

    Hysteria.

How could you not follow up "Dare" with a box-office smash?

By spending too long in the studio, that's how.

Yet this is maybe my favourite Human League, with "The Lebanon", "Life On Your Own" and the marvellous "Louise".

It's so good you'd often hear tracks from it on 6music if they were by another band!

Hysteria is great. Thanks for reminding about Life On Your Own.

Counting "Seventeen Seconds" as The Cure's first album, I was wondering what came next? Carnage Visors? Looked it up and found "the film has since disappeared and only Lol Tolhurst, Robert Smith, and Simon Gallup own copies of it"...

Of course, "Seventeen Seconds" WAS the second album after "Three Imaginary Boys". If only the Cure had produced more like that in the early 1980s...try humming "At the Funeral Party" (though you CAN, unlike some of the other stuff...)

1990s had plenty of groups with better second albums:

Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish their second, and in my opinion their best album overall.

Sleeper - The It Girl much better than the uneven 'Smart'

Portishead's second album ignored, but really very good too!

Tindersticks' second album arguably better than their first, overall. Definitely my favourite album of theirs.

i suppose Nirvana, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, Breeders, Pavement, Beck also all had second albums that were their most successful, and pretty much defined their careers?

Beastie Boys' second album 'Paul's Boutique' pretty much defined their musical career direction for them, I would say, even if it weren't that successful..

Everyone seemed to ignore Air after their first album.. Same for Garbage. With good reason?

Sigur Ros - Aegis Byrjun their second and possibly best album?

As for the 2000s - a lot of 'good first album, followed by rubbish second album' syndrome and that definitely includes Arcade Fire, as well as Franz Ferdinand.

It was Elbow's second album that did it for me, mainly because of 'Fugitive Motel'. A moment of genius, is that.

Radiohead's 'The Bends' has to be up there, too. And Pearl Jam's 'Vs'. And Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid'. And Hendrix's 'Axis: Bold as Love'.

Second albums are often great; perhaps the songs are written on a post-debut high, when the toll of touring and feeding the media hasn't taken the shine off it yet.

Lloyd Cole and The Commotions 'Easy Pieces'. I think Lloyd wasn't keen on it, I like it.

It felt like a bit of a different beast to 'Rattlesnakes', but was still full of intelligent lyrics and good music and the mighty beautiful 'Perfect Blue'

It was in no way indicative of their 3rd and final album 'Mainstream' mind, which was an altogether different kettle of fish, but superb with it.....
