The Top of the Pops tune is a cover (or instrumental version), I discovered on Shaun's show this morning, of "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin.

Led Zep fans won't mind, I hope, if I say the vocal version sounds like Mark Webber winning a grand prix while crashing into a nomadic band of Ewoks.

Chris Hawkins finished his show this morning with a jupitustastic reggae choon. "Hmm, reminds me of 'One Step Beyond' by Madness" I thought. The artist, known as Prince Buster, helpfully intoned "One Step Beyond" occasionally. He *might* have covered it, or perhaps it was the other way round. smiley - winkeye

I noticed on Gid's show last night that the "The In Crowd" by Dobie Gray was doubtless the original of the Bryan Ferry version! So astounded was I that I posted on a thread I had made about "samples" on Marc's board.

which I can't edit to remove. smiley - doh

And "Tainted Love" was originally a Northern Soul classic with a female vocal...

Any other songs you didn't realise were covers?

With one or two notable exceptions, most Ska bands of the late 70s early 80s shamelessly ripped off old reggae tunes whilst adding next to nothing to the original version.

J'accuse the Specials - at times, no more than a KWS-style cover band in my opinion. From memory, they did "Monkey Man", "Message to You, Rudy and "Enjoy Yourself". There may well have been more. Madness were far from blame free on this front too.

The only ska act I can think of who took a cover and totally made it their own was the Beat when they performed "Tears of a Clown", which is utterly brilliant.

I heard the original "Monkey Man" on 6Music recently - I even recognised it from the intro which was the same!

Another "better than the original" cover is surely The Tourists:

    "I only...I only...I only...I only...I only want to be with you"...

The last track on the Sneaker Pimps' first album was called "How Do" and was really rather spiffing.

Several Years later, I then bought the Go! Team's second album "Proof of Youth" which came with a bonus disc of B-sides and remixes. On this bonus disc, there was one track called "Willow's Song". It was exactly the same song but with a different title.

I got rather indignant about the Go! Team's shameful theft of the Sneaker Pimp's song, especially as they changed the title to try and mask their actions.

It wasn't until I dug a little further that I found out "Willow's Song" is taken from the "Whicker Man" soundtrack. In retrospect I really should have realised this as "How Do" even contains a sample of the film with Britt Ekland saying "Sargent" to Edward Woodward's character.

    Thick or what?

It wasn't until I dug a little further that I found out "Willow's Song" is taken from the *"Whicker* Man" soundtrack.Β  I can just imagine that, Whicker Island, all these Alan Whickers going "well, here we ARE in this remote PLACE and looking FORWARD to experiencing the local CUSTOMS at first HAND"... smiley - smiley

One of my dad's few compact discs is the soundtrack from The Wicker Man. It was actually shattered when he got it from Smith's so he got a replacement. He's not too clear yet how to play it - which side up should it go on the turntable?

...and it's smaller than a 45 but it's an album, should he select 33? smiley - winkeye

The Go-Gos' version of "Our Lips Are Sealed" was on the wireless recently. I hesitate to identify the Fun Boy 3 as the original - wasn't one of their hits an Elvis cover?

And what about "It Ain't What You Do, It's The Way That You Do It?"...

I believe that your man Terry Hall co-wrote the song, "Out Lips are Sealed" with one of the Go-Gos, (Jane W perhaps?).

Then he liked it so much, (or hated their version so much), that Fun Boy Three then did a "cover" of his own song.

Not a cover but a sample - MC Solaar's "Nouveau Western" unashamedly samples "Bonnie and Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot.

Bardot looks rather like she should be a VIZ subscription girl - actually wearing quite a lot!

(item by me on Marc's board -

One cover I DID recognise was St. Etienne's cover of "Let's Kiss and Make Up" by The Field Mice.

I mention that so I can think about Sarah Cracknell ...drool...

On the same theme Tol, Renegade Soundwave also sampled the same song on their eponymous track.

    Quite a decent tune too...

At the time though, I had no idea that they'd sampled SG and BB. Again, musical ignorance on my behalf.

Looks like Andrew Eldritch doing an acoustic version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

Interesting, the sample on that is really quiet except for the whoop.

Of course, the person doing the whoop will have got very little, whereas the whoop's composer will be coining it with mechanical royalties! smiley - winkeye

Rene and Yvette's cover of "Je t'aime" is a hoot:

and given ze ground rules of 'ow zey speak, I like it when she says "Je t'aime" and he says "What? Say eet in Frrench!"

I *did* realise it was a cover, though... smiley - winkeye

Gideon played this track last week - Tinkerbells Fairydust - Marjorine. I know it has been sampled in a dance record but I don't know what it is. As soon as I heard I thought that's from...err..does anyone know where it's from?

Gloria Jones....who was also Marc Bolan's girlfriend. I think the Mini was hers, too.

The Memory Band did a live set at Glastonbury of the Wicker Man. I'd like to see them do that one day.

The trend for acoustic twee versions of pop hits has to stop. That "Somewhere over the rainbow" is probably to blame. And I am of the opinion that Wet Wet Wet covered REM's version of the Troggs' "Love is all around".

First time I heard Interstellar Overdrive was played live by Camper Van Beethoven (oh and the same is true of "O Death" but I thought it was "Oh Jeff" at the time.)
