I was sat here....sorry, good evening....I was sat here listening to The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips thinking what a good album it is.

When I first heard it I raced out (well, went out eventually) and invested in their back catalogue only to be sorely disappointed. Subsequent 'Lips' LPs have been great but it goes to show the dangers of heading back in time.

Perhaps I shouldn't admit it but many, many years ago I did a similar thing with Crowded House after rocking out (gently) to their Woodface LP. Again, it resulted in albums whos only purpose now is to bulk out a collection that, from a distance, looks full of promise.

More recently Grizzly Bear (only mentioning that to regain some credibility).

Obviously some artists peak at first base, but has anyone else wasted hard earned cash in this way and on whom.

I loved "Widow City" by The Fiery Furnances so thought I was on safe ground and getting a bargain when I saw "Rehearsing My Choir" and "Bitter Tea" in the 2nd hand CD shop.

I never managed to listen to the whole of the first of these...but I reckon I could make a better record with my Grandma and she's been dead for 20 years.

I really like the Rolling Stones 'Dirty Work' but I'm sorry to say nothing else in that back catalogue passes muster.

you could also argue that a record being right slap bang to your taste is no guarantee for the next ones being similar.

"Seventeen Seconds" was brilliant in a way which IMHO neither "Pornography" nor "Carnage Visors" lived up to.

Cassette tapes for which I never bought the compact discs...
