    Hello,

    What's more complicated -
1- Attempting to hire a car?
2 - Setting up electronic battleships?
    3 - Baking a sponge cake?

I reckon it's option one. Oh, the wait to find out if the vehicle we get has 2 or 4 doors, what colour it is (silver is the odds-on favourite) and whether I'll be able to work the radio properly.

This is all in the name of sloping off on Wednesday to Hay on Wye to sample local delicacies and learn about books. Yes, books Mr Riley. Books.

Books. We're staying on a farm which is two miles from one of the best public houses in the area. Remind me to take a torch.

Before that there's groundhogs and ACR to look forward to on Tuesday and Monday night is the 79-81 special. At the time of writing Prof Spear is refusing to send me the final running order for the latter in case it spoils the surprise. I put in a wish-list of about 300 records and if I don't get to play all of them it'll be a right old swizz.

Join us if you can from 9 if not there's always the iplayer at bbc....etc.

    Keep rocking.
    Gidx

Just wondering if the Prof might try and sneak some more Flying Lizards in? Anyhoo, looking forward to the show tonight.

Ah! Flying Lizards! That's what I want.

In fact that would prove your rental car will be a white convertible. smiley - winkeye

Beware when returning a sponge cake to the shop you bought it from. They'll wilfully dent the icing and scratch the jammy filling and then polish it up at your expense.

    Word to the wise.

Is there still that toll bridge at Hay-on-Wye where it costs about one old penny to cross?

    I'm going with number 1).

Last year's incident involved being pointed to the wrong bus, going to Rome city centre, lots of arguing with raised voices (I can't speak Italian), walking to another car hire place, much stroking of chins, and then to top it all off, having the baptism of fire that is Italian driving, whilst attempting to navigate an escape from Rome.

I note that the fuss about Oxford's official poet has ended with the winner having resigned.

This was announced at a literary festival in Hay-on-Wye...

Gid, are we staring at the erudite boys again? or are you publishing a novel? or "wye" are you heading there? smiley - smiley

It was a holiday. With books. And a drop of local ale. It's the only place I've been where you can see Kate Adie, the Archbishop of Canterbury and him that played Mr Hopwood in Grange Hill.

    Heartily recommended.

trying to get the show together for tonight. What I hadn't counted for is another day off from school for the boy. Multi-tasking ahoy.
He's also off on thursday due to it being polling day. Did this used to be the case? Days off for democracy? I'm sure I had no holiday at all at school apart from about 9 months in the summer when it was always hot and I played cricket and listened to David Dundas. And one year Elvis died.

Better get back to work. Need to think of some threads too.

bet you could only get Radio Wales to listen to though. Mind you storming Adam Walton show yesterday, great idea for if you need to pre record a show as he got different people in bands etc to pick the track that had most influenced them. You really should try and listen you'd LOVE this show Gid:

Plus have you seen The School's 'Valentine' is being used to advertise Stephen Fry's new show?

storming Adam Walton show yesterdayΒ  that's the second big-up I've seen for Radio Wales recently.

Remind me, Hay is on the border between England and Wales and counted as Herefordshire until the "king" of the bookshops declared it an independent republic...is that right?

It's the only place I've been where you can see Kate Adie, the Archbishop of Canterbury and him that played Mr Hopwood in Grange Hill. Β  I'll tell you, if I saw Kate Adie, I'd run for the hills! (..because she only goes to really dangerous places)

He's also off on thursday due to it being polling day. Did this used to be the case?Β  Yes, always was, for those schools which were polling stations...my local polling station is a village hall but I'll be away, thank goodness for postal votes...

nowadays we're so used to having no say in anything (it doesn't seem to be individual politicians that we can vote for who decide things, anyway) that we forget how important it is (from the child's viewpoint) to choose a school which is also a polling station! smiley - winkeye

    It's in Powys:

"The town lies on the east bank of the River Wye and is within the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of the Black Mountains. The town is situated just within the Welsh side of the border with Herefordshire, England, which is defined by the Dulas Brook at this stretch."

I'm share the Kate A fear. Plus one of getting Grand Designs in to film your house building and finding you're pregnant.

It's been ordered Mr Gull. Really must start a new thread soon, I think tonight (Monday) may have a "2009 is halfway done, what do you reckon?" feel to it.

Might not though. Did Gary do the trouser news on Thursday?

"2009 is halfway done, what do you reckon?"Β  if you think the year begins on January 1st and ends on December 31st, you must be having a *really* bad year to hope it was half ended TBH.

Why wish our lives away? It's sunny, the real-life birds are singing (though the DAB ones have snuffed it) and everything in the garden is lovely.

Though have I missed Peppa Pig? *snort*

As for trouser news, I am belatedly "listening again" but although Gary is like Gid for being able to read out complicated mails properly, I can't say I caught it...

    Captain's log supplementary:

So, *Hengist Pod*, the mid-point of the year is 2nd July ... (said your correspondent just now)

This lovely weather we're having is very probably our summer anyway...due to be over by Thursday...

Thanks for playing the request, DJ Coe, public service broadcasting at its best. I'd never heard the song either until I caught a bit played during the credits of the recent Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ4 documentary. I looked up the lyric about peanuts and pigeons, that's how I found the title.

Now, what's the Belle & Sebastian song where they do something similar to what The Mamas & the Papas did during that one? Am I just imagining it?

It's in PowysΒ  for the benefit of the tape, the GPO clearly believes it to be in Herefordshire, hence my misapprehension.

    Wikipedia says:

    Constituent country Wales
    Sovereign state United Kingdom
    Post town HEREFORD
    Postcode district HR3

I also heard Chris Hawkins say he was at the book fair there too! Don't you have a business resumption plan banning more than one good DJ from being in one place at once?
