Good afternoon all,
Gideon played a fantastic track on Thursday night by Rodriguez. The following lunchtime I headed straight for Rough Trade and got the 'Cold Fact' LP and spent most of the weekend listening to it. It's a household favourite already but not an album that would have come to my attention.
It got me thinking that the Gid Army, what with their great taste in music and a dufferish belief in all that's right in the world, must be a source of other lost treasures.
I've got two to throw to the floor, gauntlet-style.
1 - All Night Radio - Spirit Stereo Frequency (2004) - A dreamy landscape of loveliness that, in my mind, is a modern Sgt. Peppers.
2 - The Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage (1999) - Experimental rock at its very best, a collage of weird sounds, linked together with brilliant catchy tunes.
Anyone got any other gems that may have passed us by?
Nice, lost treasures. May do this as a thread on Tuesday night's show. Which means I'll have to hold "Yes I have played cricket while at a music festival" for another night.
There's an album by Idiot Son that springs to mind - Lummox it was called. And an amazing Andrew Bird album from about 12 years ago. Will think of some more...
Lost treasures? If someone ever made a record called "That hare out of "Masquerade" is under a bush in Ampthill" that would surely have qualified.
"Passion Plays" by The Passions is pretty good throughout - what does Liz Kershaw say? "All Killer, no Driller" - though only "I'm In Love With a German Film Star" ever gets played.
However, I'd have to nominate "Matador" by X-mal Deutschland. After they were weird but before they got too poppy and available in Germany. Great tunes and fantastic ideas (e.g. an ocean, or the New Year's fireworks).
But when I looked at buying the compact disc to supplement my vinyl copy, I'm sure I only found it on Japanese import at Β£40!!
Now I'm not paying that. That's what I call "lost treasure"...
tolhurst - I have laughed out loud at two of your posts today, thanks. However, I have to say that you've also lost vital Duffing points for the repeated use of smiley faces (tsk!).
Gid played some Frasier Chorus a little while ago and I have to confess that it made me feel very whistful and nostalgic for their first two albums which I think were superb. Sadly, I think I was firmly in the minority as their album sales could be described as sluggish at best.
To those who like thoughtful lyrics and well arranged pop songs, I can not recommend "Sue" or "Ray" highly enough. Magic.
Lee, glad to know I am bringing you out of the "no smirking" zone.
I found I had to learn to use these Californian insurance-inspired smiley face things because interrent users used to get really annoyed that I could believe such drivel. Smiley face.
When you think of Phill Jupitus describing the writing on the Bayeux Tapestry as early text messages - "Harold got one in the eye there loll" - you will understand why I am called tolhurst.
Another thing inspired by American advertising like the smiley face - Crocker Bank, the bank that brought down what had once (1950) been the biggest bank in the world, the Midland - is the Carpenters' "We've only just begun"! Lost treasure? I think not! Good tune, but so ubiquitous, it's everywhere...
Oh, oh, oh....[raises hand excitedly in the air]...thought of another one.
'Blonder Tongue Audio Baton' by The Swirlies. A migrane-inducing explosion of heavy shoegazing. If you can imagine such a thing.
Neutral Milk Hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea. a total classic
The Ladybug Transistor - Beverley Atonal
Lullaby for the Working Class - Blanket Warm
i'd add more but i need food!

Fully in agreement. Have both on vinyl, well-preserved in a conditioned vault.
Nice one there layaboutlaurence.
I was going to mention In The Aeroplane Over The Sea as well but I was worried that my girlfriend would read this thread and tut about how predictable I am. Or that it would look like an advert for the Elephant 6 Collective.
ooh! ooh! How do you get a little quote box like that?

doesn't seem to work!
As for the topic, how about Lives & Times' "New Idea of Heaven"?
Do it with

Recently I was shocked and appalled to learn that Plastic Bertrand's debut LP 'AN 1' isn't available on CD.
but how do I get the
"Quoted from this message" bit?
That hasn't worked. I'm happy to follow a link to a "how to" (duffing skills allowing).
As a lost treasure, how about The Armoury Show's "Waiting for the Flood"? or Richard Jobson's "Badman"?
Everytime I hear "C'est Plane Pour Moi" or Plastic Bertrand, even if it either are just mentioned, I am automatically whisked away to National Lampoon's Eurpoean Vacation as the Griswalds attempt to "do" all the works of art on show in Paris.
Incidentally, I am also finding it equally difficult to locate a copy of "Holiday Road" by Lindsey Buckingham from National Lampoon's Vacation. It's such a great, fun song. Any chance of playing it Gid?

This gives you carte blanche to make up all sorts of misquotes, e.g. do you remember saying:
³§³σ±π·Ι-·Ι²Ή»ε»ε±π³σ-·Ι²Ή»ε»ε±π³σΜύ
Not when you were sober, I'll warrant.

I nominate 24 Years of Hunger by Eg & Alice. Forget the Brother Beyond connection, just a great pop record which I never get bored of. They were on Wogan and then vanished.
Probably sold about 10 copies. Just checked and astonishingly copies are going on Amazon for around Β£40.
Totally agree about the Eg and Alice album - really superb, timeless, beautiful songs beautifully sung. The song "Indian" is particularly sublime.
I'd also recommend:
Tallulah Gosh - The Go-betweens
Miss America - Mary Margaret O'Hara
We hate you south african bds - Microdisney

It works it works! Thanks!
Hmm. Does Eno & Cale's excellent "Wrong Way Up" count as "lost"? "Spinning Away" was marvellous...
i have two treasures that are so lost they don't appear on cd!
the Cowboys International - original sin
Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club - English Garden
Laurence
Bruce Woolley's English Garden not on compact disc?
A must play!
I nominate Lost in Revelry by The Mendoza Line (2002). Great US indie pop with a comforting side portion of twang.
Barry Adamson is very under-rated. Just listening to King of Nothing Hill his "Black Moses" album and it is very good indeed. He plays harpsicord and glockenspiel on it as well as bass. Why he doesn't get more soundtrack commissions is a mystery to me.
Brooklyn math nerd Bob Schnieder is also very good if you like sunshine pop. Apples in Stereo Discovery of a World Inside the Moone and (particularly) New Magnetic Wonder are both excellent.
What's the betting the Eg and Alice CD gets reissued in the wake of Eg's new one?
