The bells...THE BELLS!!! (SANCTUARY!!!)
Finally, a thread which Quasimoto can appreciate...what, in your opinion, is the best use of bells (cow or otherwise) in pop/rock music??
A few of my favorites:
'Cyclops Rock' by They Might Be Giants...
'Disarm' by Smashing Pumpkins...
'Bonzo Goes To Bitburg' by the Ramones...
'Xanadu' by RUSH (Neil Peart practically included the kitchen sink in this early recording from the prog-rock masters)
Discuss...
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica (one of their best songs live)
At least I think there are some bells during the intro, i'll check....
Well Tubular Bells has got to feature in there somewhere hasn't it? I know its old hat, borderline prog and was given away as a free CD in some rag a few months ago, but I still like it now and again. Especially the Viv Stanshall intro bit at the end.
Ommadawnβs quite good as well. Ok Iβm officially uncool!

Mozzer -- Tubular Bells is an eternal classic (if you recall, that is the theme track to The Exorcist...the power of Christ compels you!!!)
Don't know Ommadawn...maybe I'm the uncool one!!!

Oh, and I've got a couple more, from the dark reaches of the late 70's-early 80's:
I Want Your Love by Chic
Hells' Bells by AC/DC
Closer To The Heart by RUSH
Actually I first heard it in a school play production of the Midwich Cuckoos in which I played a mad scientist (typecast!) and it played over my entrance. It was dead new in those days and our hip drama teacher had nabbed an early copy of it. I think old Phil Glass and the whole systems music movement owed a lot to that album.
Ommadawn was the album after TB and featured an ending on the first side with a vaguely ethnic drumbeat. Very much inspirational to me at the time.
Well if we're talking RUSH, doesn't Cygnus X1 have bells in there somewhere? I can't believe they would have let the central opus go by without some kind of atonal inclusion.
Could we also include bell 'like' sounds. There were quite a few bands in the 80's that favoured that famous ring modulated bell sound that was characteristic of the Prophet 5 keyboard.
Japan loved it.

No problem...I am not being a stickler about 'synthesized' bells...
That Chic track I mentioned earlier may have had 'faux' bells itself (it was from the dark reaches of disco)...not sure though...
Can we include sleigh bells? Because 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' by the Stooges has to be the most menacing use of those innocuous things.
Funeral for a freind by Elton John. In his good period. Nice use of the fake funeral bell there.
It's got to be Detestimony by Fini Tribe. Peelie played this quite a lot and it was a mesmerising track.
Dig it out Gid...........

Sleigh bells are fine, too...but no Christmas music...that's out of bounds (and also too easy)...
Is that a bell on the Jackson Five's Can You Feel It? That bit where it goes
da-da ee-bong! dah dah-da de dah dah de-dah.
It's got tubular bells all over it. We'll do this one tonight.

RichardWeir...just listened to a sample of 'Detestimony'...good track!!!
I can see why Lord Peel would have liked it so much...
San Jacinto - Peter Gabriel. Has a sampled bell sound sequenced all the way through it.
One of my all time favourite tracks and made all the better for me after having the experience of playing it on the way up San Jacinto mountain many years ago. I'm an old hippy at heart you know!
It is brilliant though and something you should definately play Gid. Maybe even an idea for the wist wagon.
Ommadawn didn't follow tubular bells. Hergest Ridge was Oldfield's second offering. It was panned in the music press, and unfairly I think. In fact, I think Hergest Ridge is probably his best.
However, I did once listen to a whole side on the wrong speed and not notice.
PS: this not-posting-any-more-thing isn't going well. Still, best not to rush these things.

Thanks, Gid, for backing up my rule about no 'festive Crimbo tunes' for the use of bells...out of bounds...
Loved the Nlf3...was that a gamelan (I am being a duffer, and refusing to use my Wikipedia this time) on that tune?? New tune, with good bells in it to boot...

Oh, Gid!!
You sure know how to dangle a carrot in a listener's face, only to tease...will we get Jackson 5 tonight, or won't we?? I wait eagerly...
Cheers!!

Wow, I click onto this thread, just as said tune starts - Cosmic, maaaan
Windy Beans - Detestimony is a bit of a whopper and a good 20 years old at least, I'm either going to dig out the tape with it on or do some digital searching, if I can manage it.......
Well I desperately tried to find some rock music with a Gamelan in it, just to prove how blinking clever I was, and failed miserably as usual.
I do remember an occasion though when Mrs Mozo and I were driving through the painted desert in Arizona and the only music we could get on the radio was a gamelan piece. It came out of nowhere as we crested a hill and lasted about 10 minutes, then disappeared into static never to be heard again. We were the only car on the road for hours and it was one of those never to be forgotten, genuinely spiritual experiences man! And we hadn't be indulging in βrecreationalsβ or anything.
Said I was a hippy.
