Hey, Gid!!
I have an idea for a thread for the 21st January show, if you're not full up yet...what, in your opinion, is the best use of strings (not including guitar) in rock music??
My top 3:
(1) Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants (any excuse to bring TMBG into a conversation) -- lovely Turkish gypsy violining
(2) Devil Went Down To Georgia by Charlie Daniels Band -- fiddle
(3) Fisherman's Song by the Waterboys (mandolin...also just one of my favorite songs...)
Cheers!!
Jeff

never stop - echo and the bunnymen
all apologies - nirvana
everything by the penguin cafe orchestra
we're here - guillemots (they had the strings only part as a b-side and it's a wonderful piece on its own.
the strings on r.e.m. stuff are very good - and arranged by John Paul Jones for the most part. they are also very understated and sneak up on you, which i like.

The end of 'Lets sleep together' by Porcupine Tree.
How come 6Music never plays Porcupine Tree?
Hey Gid, why don't you play some Porcupine Tree?
Did I mention Porcupine Tree?

The strings accompanying the Semolina Pilchard lines in I Am The Walrus. 2mins & 53secs in.
It's my favourite stringed passage on any record.

Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack
And of course, anything by ELO.

The strings on "Getting Away With it" by Electronic are really beautiful.
Simple, un-obtrusive yet utterly critical to the overall success of the song. I especially love the closing seconds where all the other instruments are faded down leaving just the strings to close the tune.
Wonderful.

Hey Windy, try this
Not the best bitrate but it gives you an idea. Interesting visuals as well. Puts me in mind of what the office at moderation central must look like.

After I first heard 'Riverman' I put it on a minidisc and played it on repeat for pretty much a day. Sublime.
I'm also rather partial to the strings on 'Mike Mills' by Air.

Can I just say that I think one or two of the suggestions here are either synths or samples, and not real strings.
My favourites are Scott Walkers' solo stuff, particularly the strings on Scott 3, which, while not my favourite of his records, contains some outstanding arrangements by Peter Knight and in particular the recently deceased Angela Morley(Wally Stott), who was also responsible for the music and theme for Hancocks Half Hour, and The Goon Show, amongst other things. Sleepwalkers Woman from 1984's Climate of Hunter is another powerful string arrangement.
Another favourite is Ocean Rain by the Bunnymen. Always reminds me of seeing them doing it live.
Oh, and Lol Tolhurst 'playing' the violin in the video for Catch by The Cure. Always makes me laugh.
"I remember even though it felt soft at the time, I always use to wake up sore".

Oh yeah, and the 1987 version of 'Still of the Night' by Whitesnake ; )
Probably more for Tawny Kitaen on the hood of the car...

Whilst we're in metal territory, can I admit as a really, really guilty pleasure I like 'Stargazer' by Rainbow. Nine or so minutes of orchestra backed Dio fronted madness that's so over the top it's back down at the bottom of the hill.
Phew, good to have that one off my chest...

I really feel I may have opened up a deep dark secret in my soul. Next, onto my past history with Rush.
Or maybe a few other good orchestral records:
Tom Traubert's Blues - Tom Waits
A Salty Dog - Procul Harum
Lousiana 1927 - Randy Newman (heartbreaking)
The Thrill Is Gone - B B King
Moonlight Mile - Rolling Stones

Marc's show Monday night had Sergeant Buzfuz live. Marc chatted to Kate who plays the Dulcimer in the band!
How's that for something different !

Don't hear a lot of dulcimer in rock music...however, I do know thanks to Wikipedia that Neil Peart (RUSH drummer) and Steven Tyler (Aerosmith lead singer) are hammer dulcimer players...
Aerosmith had an instrumental called 'Dulcimer Stomp' (from Pump)...used Wikipedia for that, but I own a copy and forgot all about it...

Does that fit your definition of strings though? If so can we have harps and banjos and bouzoukis and stuff?
I think we need adjudication here.

Mozzer -- for edification purposes, yes anything but a guitar will work...if you can throw me some balalaika (Gorky Park, perhaps??), I will be thoroughly impressed...
Banjo is kind of hard...I love the work of Bela Fleck (the rare electric banjo), but that's more jazz (even though he frequently likes to do Beatles' covers)...

Hammered dulcimer, eh?
Black Widow by Michelle Shocked fits the bill, I think.
