Buffering my good man, that's what I reckon your problem is.
Your connection to the interweb is probably not allowing sufficient bandwidth to permit the requisite amount of data through which continuous, un-interupted play requires. For example, it's taking 10 seconds to stream 5 seconds of music so you get a 5 second segment followed by a gap whilst the next 5 seconds are streamed to your PC, buffered and then played. The buffer is not being filled up again quickly enough, so it is being emptied and not re-filled quickly enough whilst you're listening, hence the pause.
You might be able to increase the size of your buffer, (probably best done in real-player as I think that's what the iPlayer is based upon), and see if that works. If that's not the problem, I'm not sure what else could be causing it.
You can find your buffer setting in Real Player at Tools, Preferences, "Playback Settings" which is under "General" and the last option in the list on the right is "More Options". Here you can increase the buffer. I believe the default is 30 seconds, you might want to increase this to 60 seconds and see if it makes any difference. If it gets better but does not fix the fault, incease the buffer size again until it sorts the problem.
Hope this helps. Sorry if this is not the problem.

Lee was using his pipe to point at the relevant components of the interweb whilst explaining that. Be careful not to inflate the buffer too far or it might burst and let the trolls out.

Can you not get banned from the message board for talking about inflating your buffer?

On a (slightly) serious note. Try switching the iPlayer into Dialup modem version. If you click on the link in the bottom left hand side of your iPlayer dashboard, window wassisname and it'll change to a less bandwidth hungry version. You get a bit of a decrease in quality but it works when all else fails.
Try switching it back to the broadband version every so often to see if it has improved. It might be a local issue either with your personal set up or with your broadband connection.
Now is that techno-duffing or what?
