    It's January.
    It's cold.
It's currently snowing here in the Glorious North, (but that horrible wet snow that's just cold and damp and not much fun at all).
Booking a foreign holiday will simply be a pipe-dream for many this year.
The economy slides ever nearer rock-bottom.
Businesses bite the dust on a daily basis.
Unemployment will soon be so bad that UB40 have threatened to record a new version of β€œOne in Ten”.
The outlook for 2009 can be described as β€œnot very good”, at best.

Surely we can do something about it? Surely we can create a small island of pleasure in an ocean of discontent. What we need is something to look forward to, one day where we can all get together and forget our troubles, meet like-minded folk to enjoy drinks and share stories about music and duffing. Yes, it's that time again, it's Gid-fest. Gid-fest 2009 in fact.

I'd like to cordially invite all those who can make it to join me, (and hopefully at least one other person, even if it is only the bar-man), for another day of un-ashamed "boring muso talk"... and drink For those of you who weren't able to make it last year, the inaugural event was a wonderful day which went surprisingly well, (if I do say so myself). At the moment, plans for events, dress-code (fancy-dress has already been suggested, but only in jest... I think), audience participation, etc. have not really been formed but as we get nearer the date I'll publicise details so we all know what to expect.

    Just to give you an idea of what we did last year, highlights included;

1)– iPod roulette, where each attendee had to randomly play 5 tracks from their MP3 player
2)– Unlucky Dip, where each attendee brought the most embarrassing record in their collection, gift-wrapped. It was then placed in the β€œUn-Lucky Dip” box and once full, each person pulled out someone else's record to take home as a gift. I was most impressed to receive Sam Fox's β€œTouch Me”.
3)– Marathon Paintbox Jury, where Matt produced over 60 superb versions of album covers for us to try and guess. The winners receiving (almost) official Duffer mugs!
4)– Music Quiz, where I pulled together 30 overly-difficult questions about music from the past 50 years and another 10, rather random questions on Duffing. Again, the winners received Duffer mugs!

Unfortunately for those, (like myself), who do not live anywhere near our Nations capital, it will be held in London and probably at the same venue as last year, namely the Victoria public house in Bayswater. I'll apologise now to those of you who won't be able to make it due to the distance, especially those who do not live in the UK! Likely date will be the 15th of August, almost a year to the day since the last Gid-fest, but it could be brought back/forward if this date is not good for most people. And β€œYes”, I know it's over 8 months away but last year some people mentioned they would have made it but weren't given sufficient notice, so I'm getting in there early before the festivals announce their line-ups!

As before, I'll set up an event on Facebook for those of you who use such a newfangled contraption, where I'll post more details and people will be able to join so I can get an idea as to likely numbers. Similarly, I'll try and get the admin on the Gideon Coe Appreciation Society on Facebook to send a message out to all the members of the group. If you're not on Facebook, please let me know on this thread whether you'll be making it on the day or not, as numbers will determine which room at the pub we book, or whether we actually need to move the event to the 02 arena.

Gid and β€œteam” - as last time, you're both more than welcome to join us on the day if you feel so inclined. If not, don't worry there's no pressure to attend but we promise not to go all weird on you if you do turn up.

Finally, if there's anyone who wants to make suggestions as to what we can do on the day or if you have any particular requests or recommendations, please let me know via this thread or the Facebook event, (when I manage to get it set up of course).

Thanks in advance for your enthusiasm and hope to see you at Gid-fest 2009.

    Lee,
    The Glorious North.

It's a stone's throw from Paddington so I'm sure there'll be a few options around there. Failing that, only a short tube ride to the Dorchester.

Just to let all those who are interested know, I've managed to set up an event on Facebook which you can join if you're planning on coming and have a Facebook account.

    You'll find our event at;

As mentioned before, if you can let me know via Facebook or this thread if you're planning on joining us it will make booking the right sized room/venue much easier.

    Cheers.

It's like booking with Virgin Trains. You get in there with 8 months' notice and they're, like, "sorry, that service is not yet available to book"; so you try 2 weeks 6 days 23 hours before departure, and they're, like, "sorry, no more Value seats are available on that service." And I'm, like, saying that with too much advance notice, people won't want to commit, keep the date free like, and there's a critical tipping point at which they all suddenly find something to do on 15 August, and Cyril's left looking at 10 kilos of burgers and sausages and a litre of HP sauce. Poor Shabba's tea was an easy decision for days after that. And I never want to look another sesame bun in the face. What? Oh yes GIDFEST09! I was thinking of last year.

    Fit like loons and quines!
dinae fash yersels, let us denizens of the frozen far north get together and have our own Gidfest, we could call it "Tea in the pub". We could meet up in The P.O.W, the most duffer pub in the whole of Aberdeen, if not Scotland. It'll be fine.

We could have a wee blether and translate songs in to Doric...Fars me Ganzie? by Sultans of Ping.

ah now, I was trying to be clever. Up here we have something called "T in the park". Its a music festival.

Tea in the pub - T in the park. D'yer get it?

I was also tipping my hat towards dufferdom, with a nice cup of tea....

OK, so I won't try that again.

Anyway, yes, once the snows have cleared and the ground thawed, perhaps June time, all good music lovers should converge on the POW or perhaps the Aberdeen beer festival for an evening of standing around drinking beer and discussing the relative merits of Simple Minds vrs Sons and Daughters.

I can't say I'd ever considered any comparison of Simple Minds and Sons and Daughters - maybe a bit too diverse for me, but I can't think of anything better at this time of night.

Pete - Are we proposing a two-legged Gid-fest 2009 this year? I like the sounds of that, although it may obligate me to attend both!

Given travel logistics, do you think it would be a good idea to centralise the event in Edinburgh? It would give those travelling some distance the opportunity to make it there and back in a single day.

Don't want to take over the whole thing as it's got to be your baby, (as it were), but the more that can make it the merrier it will be in my experience. Let me know your thoughts but I have to say, stellar work alround sir.

Update - I've just received confirmation from our chosen venue, the Victoria public house in Bayswater, that we can once again book the "Theatre Room" for this year's Gid-fest. The event will be held on the 15th of August as originally suggested and hopefully those of you who are interested in making it will have sufficient notice to book "cheap" (ha!) train tickets and the like.

It will start at 12pm and, as last year, go on until we drift off home, (last year this was around the 8pm mark I believe). However, if there's the will, I'm sure there may be more pub-crawling and perhaps even gig-going to be done. I, for one, will probably be leaving about half seven so I can catch the last train back to the Glorious North.

All that we need now are some ideas for what to do to pass the time and entertain ourselves during the day. All suggestions will be warmly received, (providing they're polite of course!). One thing I was going to suggest was that all attendees have to turn up wearing a band t-shirt; the obscurer the better, with the most obscure receiving a prize. If you were / are in the band who's t-shirt you're wearing, that would be even better.

If you'd like to make a suggestion as to what we should do, or what we should be wearing whilst we do it, please let me know.

There's only about 20 weeks to go, you know! It'll soon be Summer.

You may have drifted off back to the glorious North at 8pm Lee, but I'm sure 4 or 5 of us made it to last orders. I think. It's a little hazy. (They did chuck us out of the Theatre Room just after you left though, no responsible adult present)

Paintbox jury, the quiz and unlucky dip all have to make a return I would say.

Right, I've had an idea for one of the things we'll do at this year's Gid-fest.

Last year we did the "Unlucky Dip" where everyone brought the most embarrassing record in their collection, lovingly gift-wrapped, and placed it into a box. Attendees then drew a record from the box, (ideally not the one they brought with them), and saw what horror waited for them within.

On a slightly similar theme this year I wanted to ask all attendees to bring with them a record that they love but which most people may never have heard. There's a Β£10 maximum ceiling I'm imposing here and it doesn't have to cost the full Β£10, but it needs to be something which is a bit left-field so that the person picking your CD is unlikely to have it already.

So, you'll need to buy an album you really like, (on CD please), gift-wrap it and bring it on the day. The idea is that we'll all exchange CDs and then speak passionately about music we love, even if no-one else has ever heard of it! If nothing else, we should leave with a slightly broader music collection than we arrived with.

Hope this sounds like a reasonable idea and if there are any "doubles" drawn on the day, (i.e. you already own the album picked), we can do some "swapsies", I'm sure.

Just a gentle reminder that Gid-fest 2009 is getting ever closer.

It's now less than three months away. Apparently, the (relatively) cheap train tickets will soon be made available. For those like I who will be travelling some distance to make it, now's the time to start scouring those internet sites looking for the cheapest train deals possible. Good luck!

I'll post a running order for the day within the next few weeks so that everyone knows what's planned. Hopefully there'll be enough to keep everyone suitably entertained. As with last year's soiree, if you can either confirm your attendance via the Facebook page set up for the event, or via the message board, I can make sure the venue is big / small enough to accommodate us all.

Just like last year, food will be available, (including veggie options but not much in the way of vegan I'm afraid), but you will have to order and pay for this yourselves as I'm not made of cash you know!

Lastly, I'm hoping to get hold of some prizes too that we will award to the winners of this year's music quiz, Paintbox Jury and a new feature, musical anagrams! Thanks to the Roofdog and another Gid-fest volunteer for their help in sorting the entertainment out.

Hope to see you there on Saturday, the 15th of August. Keep on Duffing.

    Hello,

Me again. I hope I'm not boring too many people with these updates but I thought I'd better let those who are interested know.

It's now only 8, (or is it actually 9?), weeks until Gid-fest 2009. The date is 15th of August 2009, the start time is 12:30pm and the location is the Victoria public house, 10a Strathearn Place, Bayswater in that London. Finish time, (for me at least), will be around 7pm but there'll no doubt be plenty of others more local than I who will carry on drinking well into the night.

I can confirm that there will be prizes to give away in the shape of brand new, limited edition, completely authorised [ahem!] Gideon Coe mugs for competition winners. But what, you are wondering, are these competitions?

Well, we have a round of Paintbox Jury, a Musical Anagram round and a session of Musical Bingo. As if that was not enough, we've also got the Lee's infamous music quiz, which I can exclusively reveal, will NOT have a Marillion question in it this year. I've also been instructed to make it a little bit easier this year!

As mentioned before, all attendees are politely requested to bring along a CD of their choice, (spending no more than Β£10 I hasten to add), nicely wrapped up to place in the "Lucky Dip" box. We can then exchange CDs and see what pleasures lie within. The remit is a simple one; bring something a bit obscure or forgotten that you love but no-one else seems to know / care about. At the end of the day, we'll all leave with our musical tastes a little bit broader.

Anyway, As before, let me know via the Facebook event page or via this thread if you plan to join us on the day. Hope to see you there.

Tolhurst - judging by last year's breathless, concentrated seriousness for both Paintbox Jury and the Music Across the Decades quiz, there was what can only be described as serious, full-on, hardcore competing going on.

It was about as far from a "friendly exercise" as you could get. There was even the odd arguement about poor quality artwork and potentiall dubious answers!

It's only one calendar month away now, so I wanted to make sure that anyone who might be interested is aware and makes arrangements to join us on the day.

As mentioned (several times) before, we'll be meeting up at the Victoria Pub
10a Strathearn Place, Bayswater which isn't much of a walk from Paddington Station. Kick-off will be about 12:30pm and we'll probably go on until at least 7pm, (and possibly beyond).

There'll be plenty to do including competitions with prizes to win, lucky dip (providing everyone remembers to bring their CD of choice nicely gift-wrapped for the swapping!), as well as rounds of iPod roulette for those who bring their MP3 players.

All will be more than welcome to join us. However, there is obviously a strict behaviour code which all attendees are expected to adhere to.

No removing of cardigans or cavorting in the "near-nude".
No dancing on tables, (or the ceiling in the unlikely event that Lionel Richie puts in an appearance).
No drinking to excess, (mainly because of the potentially lethal spiral stair-case which you have to navigate to reach the loos or the main bar).
No fisticuffs no matter who spilled what. All disputes must be resolved outside in a gentleman's duel... or a game of conkers (safety goggles will not be provided by the organisers).
No paparazzi photographers please - (this applies to you Mr Hawk, what with your celebrity mates such as Harry Hill!).

Other than that, you should be spot on. Don't forget, if you are going to make it on the day, bring along a "gift-wrapped" CD of your choice. The disc needs to be an album which you love but which most people have probably never heard of. This is for the mystery CD swap which will happen at some point around 4pm!

It's the choosing of a walbum for the dip that's going to be difficult!Β  I know what I am thinking of and I just bought some cassette tapes today to make a backup.

    AND it's good!

I know I have heard that it's important to go to Japanese parties with beautifully-wrapped presents. The hostess doesn't open them for fear of having to express an opinion that one present is better than another one, so the same beautifully-wrapped present can do the rounds from party to party without anyone ever knowing its contents.

There's a lesson there for 1) the sub-prime banking crisis and 2) Noel Edmonds.

No drinking to excess, (mainly because of the potentially lethal spiral stair-case Β

I think it was for this very reason the staff at the Victoria politely but firmly moved us downstairs around 8-9ish last year. It was for our own good: stay up there past 9 and you'll be stuck there all night. Especially if you've been on the ESB.

If multiple 6 Music employees turn up I suggest we enforce a "one per quiz team" rule. And if you've ever been on Ken Bruce's PopMaster you can't enter the quizzes at all. And if you're Ken Bruce you can't come in.

Only joking Ken, come along, Lee will buy you a half.

If Ken does make it, we might have to install a spiral stair-case chair lift! However, I will be good for one half of reasonaly priced ale should he make it to the summit of the stairs unaided and without oxygen.

The "prizes" have been ordered and should be with me some time this week. As soon as they're here, I'll post some piccies on the Facebook event. I believe that Rachel has also managed to sort out some Duffer-ish badges for those who make it on the day too!

However, the badges are limited and will only be presented to the first 500 people to turn up! So you can expect to see 498 of them on eBay some time after the 15th.

I'm planning to come directly from watching Shrewsbury beat Barnet. Hope there'll still be a badge left.

Hawk - I think there'll probably be one or two badges left for you but pending the result, we may need to keep sharp objects from your reach for fear of self harm ;o)

By the way, the mugs have arrived and I will try to get a picture of them up on Facebook ASAP. I've also purchased my CD for the "Lucky Dip". Someone is in for a real treat and I am pretty confident that no-one will already have it.

well, I have gift-wrapped my CD.

Do we have to mark them so we don't get our own ones back?

Chris "the Chris" Hawkins said on today's programme (which I have finally located here!)

that both he and Gary Crowley intend to come to Gid-fest, Chris later on after a football match (as per his post on this thread).

    Just doing the planning.

I hope you will forgive me for posting again as I have discovered that although the pub is "the Victoria", the nearest big railway station appears to be Paddington and the pub is in Bayswater...

    The postcode is W2 2NH - here's a map and here's a photo with a review
