Hiya - went a couple of pages back but couldn't find a thread for Correspondence from the Midlands nor one for correspondence re:gigs attended.
I'll be ice skating tonight so will not be in a position to text or email at the time, but I wished to record my great pleasure at watching The Pains of Being Pure at Heart last night at the Social in Nottingham (I think it's Midlands by the way, didn't even check the 'up north' thread as that's just wrong...).

About 20 people in the audience, a 30minute set of gems that have been for the most part on the myspace player and therefore people were rather familiar with. Surprisingly strong drumming for a 'twee'-'indie' combo (3 blokes and 1 woman) from New York, who've been supporting the Wedding Present lately. Not an unsmiling face at the end, and they even got the shirt-cardigan-tightjeanned males in the audience to dance, visibly.

All in all a pity that it wasn't better attended (I have it on good authority - my friend who took up my tickets when I couldn't go anymore) that in Leeds (Cockpit3 on Saturday) there were only 6 or so attendees so obviously the Midlands (Nott.) is where it's at!

They're playing tonight and tomorrow and the day after (with the WP) in London, I would definitely recommend them smiley - smiley

Just noticed that they're Steve Lamacq's favourite new band this week so he'll probably have a gig and music review so you can safely ignore mine

On a more general note: is it normal for smaller, less well-known acts to play gigs around this time? I can think back a couple of years, and the most exciting/new 'discovery' feeling I got from gigs I attended mid-December

They sound great, shame they aren't coming near Cardiff.

Saw Rachel Unthank & The Winterset , fantastic, has 6 had them in to do a session at all? They really should do a whole show recording them.

Plus off to Bath this Thursday to see one of the best new live bands Kaputt

Much better live, much more wall of sound stuff than their myspace would suggest. You should get them up to the midlands.

I'm sure I heard them on the radio at some point, most likely round the Mercury Prize nominations frenzy. So I searched and found that they were also at Summer Sundae and played for Gideon...

(all I'm saying is, should do it again, perhaps -gasp - even when there's nothing to promote...)

I guess it does die off a bit in December as there's lots of demands on unsigned bands - they'll all have day jobs etc and their own Christmas parties.

The time we've noticed most bands want to tour is October/November which is actually one of the worst times to put a gig on, as all the bigger signed acts are trying to get the student pound at that time, so far too much competition. It may be that we see newer act in December because the larger bands don't tour then and there's less choice.

The summer is a complete no no, despite foreign bands thinking it's a great time to come to the UK , as everyone's spending their money on festivals, or off to the beach in our case.

Find January, February the biggest crowds for unsigned bands, but they all get worried about traveling in that winter British weather.

Wonder in more foreign acts will come over to the UK now that the Β£ has dropped?
