    Hello,

Yes yes yes it's only just November and yes yes yes I know you're busy but it's time to turn our minds to albums of the year for this year. It being 2008.

Please note it's not a vote, merely a discussion thread like the others. With the exception of the one about West Country Musical Puns which is just about swapping very poor jokes.

Anyway, back to this one. Opinions and, in many cases, reminders will help towards one of the end of the year shows which will be a look at the top 20 or so (depending on timings) albums of the year including sessions and concert performances by those involved.

So, name as many or as few as you like. Remember those which came out earlier in the year and those that may have only just come to your attention. And those in between as well. I'll not mention any in advance so as not to sully the thread.

    Over to you then,

    Gidx

A trip over to Last.Fm to see which albums from this year i've actually been listening to as opposed to ones which are great in my head, but their greatness shines out from the shelves on which they sit untouched.

In no particular order (I don't have time for sorting haven't you heard there's a credit crunch on.)

Josh Fix - Free at last
    Quality pop

    Fleet Foxes - Self-Titled
Nice atmospheric stuff from the safe haven of the sub pop label

.357 lover - Not out yet. Still just on MySpace
    Great Meatloaf/Ben Folds-esque rocking

Envy & Other Sins - We leave at dawn
    A few great tracks

Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears - Flight of the knife
Unclassifiable cinematic pop of the highest order

    --- Disappointed by this year.

The new Ben Folds. Way to Normal.

--- Looking forward to next year.

New albums by Automat and Ed Harcourt

Lots and lots more obviously but I can't type too much, it's the economy, I can't afford the letters.

Being a bit slow I'm normally about a year behind with records, so my favourite album so far this year is Rachel Unthank and The Bairns, but as I believe that is actually a 2007 record I'll have to go with Drever McCusker and Woomble, Before the Ruin.

Shortwave Set - Replica Sun Machine
    Great, fun, super-catchy songs.

    Squarepusher - Just A Souvenir
Sonically inventive liquid jazz-funk, I've been dipping into this one quite a bit over the last couple of weeks

    David Cronenberg's Wife - Bluebeard's Rooms
Not heard them much on the radio, possibly their own worst enemy as most of these songs are so filthy. Sorry, "darkly comic".

    Cat Power - Jukebox
I find her albums a bit hit and miss but this was a big big hit. Her voice just gets lovelier and lovelier.

    Portishead - Third
It gets a bit annoying when people are so effortlessly good at every single thing they do, even after 3 albums, though doesn't it? Mind you, they had long enough to get it right.

    Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Everyone's going to choose this though aren't they.

Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling
Must admit I'd forgotten they were still around over the last couple of years but this is an astonishing return to form.

The Felice Brothers - The Felice Brothers
Scarecrow rock. Almost bumped from the list out of spite after I had so much trouble getting a ticket to see them. Man it was good though.

The Fall - Imperial Wax Solvent
Always different, always the same (漏 the_roofdog, in case you were wondering).

If we're having a re-issue as well, the Rt Hon Mr Swift has it with Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue. Also Nick Lowe's Jesus Of Cool was not unwelcome.

there's a lot to choose from, and i'd have to echo the sentiments of those going for Bon Iver (For Emma, Forever Ago) but there's also room in here for TV On The Radio - Dear Science. An outstandingly varied album that so far i've not yet tired of...

My memory's not what it used to be, so I'd probably better go away and remind myself of what's appeared this year, and investigate some releases which shamefully, I haven't yet checked out thoroughly. That Bon Iver album for instance.

A couple immediately spring to mind though - Danny And The Champions Of The World (maybe preaching to the converted with that one as far as Gid's concerned) and A Book Like This by Angus & Julia Stone.

And yes, well done to Elbow. First time I can remember being pleased at the announcement of the Mercury Prize winner.

Also, I will probably get Fleet Foxes self-titled CD with Xmas money I will get inevitably from my parents (waving to New England)...

It's a broad church, so they say, but don't you think Fleet Foxes aren't really that good?

There should be no doubt in anyone's mind as to the correct answer:

Partie Traumatic - The Black Kids.

Uplifting and brilliant on just about every level. You know I'm right.

I've seen them live...Civilian..... I saw them in Brighton a few months ago at the Freebutt, they packed it out, the place was absolutely heaving. Picked up the album and it's pure quality. Can't say that I have heard them get any radio play, something that needs to be remedied.

Albums called When Was it Anything Else.

    Also liked

John Mayer - Where the light is on (live)
Paul Weller - Twenty Two dreams
AC / DC - Black Ice
Elbow - the seldom seen Kid

Its the 29th of November for goodness sake, never mind, here goes.

    Foals - Antidotes
Mogwai - The hawk Is Howling
The Wave Pictures - Instant Coffee Baby
British Sea Power - Does You Like Rock Music?
Sons and Daughters - This Gift (did I hear correctly that they had split up?)
(does another Smiths compilation album count?)

    Best gig of the year?
Jesus and Mary Chain supported by B.S.P. at the Kentish Town Forum
Took a couple of days for my hearing to come back. Also happy to report that after, nearly 20 years, they've still not learned to play their instruments.

Although The Wedding Present visit London next month so a final decision will have to wait till after that.

tough one... i've been disappointed with most albums i've bought this year. a prime example being Fleet Foxes, which soon vanished from my playlist due to the inconsistency.

    i'll go for

Guillemots - Red as the top one with
    R.E.M. - Accelerate as close 2nd.

both albums showed that these two bands are prepared to do their own thing.

For me Glasvegas brought something fresh this year, I cant stop listening to Kings of Leon album, But one album I was pleasantly surprised to hear was When was it anything else? by a band called Civilian. I mate of mine said he went to there launch party and was blown away by their live performance. He played me the record and I was instantly hooked in to their sound, it had everthing I wanted to hear, Edgy guitars, fantastic vocals and Songs you can dance too, I thought that I wouldnt be able to get a copy because I dont know a thing about copying cds but i went into HMV and it was there on the shelf. I couldnt belive that I had heard abou this band and I cant believe a larger label has not snapped them up, these boys have got a fresh sound!

Bought loads of records last year but not so many this year. The best I think for the year was British Sea Power's Do You Like Rock Music?

I also enjoy very much the Kaiser Chiefs album - it's in the radio and gets switched on when the 'live' broadcast is dire. But that's just me.

I was not immediately impressed by the Guillemots album (I thought it was rather more 'commercial' than I'd have thought). Wanted to get the Calexico and Fleet Foxes album and still haven't.

Am not going to get any album from an artist whose songs I hear on the radio more than twice a day for more than 2 consecutive days (and who get 'rave' but rather patently manipulative reviews on messageboards...)

Here's what I said somewhere else.
Turns out half of my favourites come from The Fence Collective.

When the Haar Rolls in. James Yorkston.
By virtue of proximity to the end of the year and impending Xmas show on 17th December this one will see the year out in the lead. This collection of songs is quite lovely. From the rockstar's lament of "B's Jig" to "Summer's Not The Same Without You" there is something of love's lost laboratories here. Travelling via the fable of hesitant love in "Tortoise Regrets Hare" and its sequel in "Temptation" (with one of my favourite lyrics of a very long time
"I can't stand to see you as drunk as you are,
    Slurring your words and staggering,
It's all too much for me to take.
So I will just find refuge in a well-harvested harbour bar,
I'll be slurring my words and staggering,
    Where's the harm in that?"

Secret Soundz Vol.1. The Pictish Trail.
This "is a diverse collection of ten lo-fi pieces that are" (in fact):
Several species of lo-fi (Dinosaur Jr meets Beck meets McCartney's Ram) gathered together in a cave near Cellardyke and grooving with The Pictish Trail.

    Inside Over Here. Rozi Plain.
Lovely trippy folk sounds with a heavenly voice. Her gig in Bristol was one of my highlights of the Fence Year.

They Flock Like Vulcans To See Old Jupiter Eyes On His 麻豆约拍 Craters. King Creosote. / Love+Hate=Hate. King Creosote & HMS Ginafore.
Continuing the fence connection. Founder and leading light brung two fine CDs our way, my fave is "Vulcans" with its return to putting out what he wants. I mean, the latter is fine but the mix of songs in progress (two versions of) It'll End In Tears / All Mine. And a song about people who go to Anstruther ...
L+H=H is an album like Double Fantasy. But Kenny and Jenny make like Ike and Tina Turner rather than John and Yoko.

    Luna. The Aliens.
Talking of which, KC's brother and the gang bring the rock to this list. Sixties inspired psychedelia and splendid 10 minute epics as well as the pop-length coolness.

    Third. Portishead.
I was two and half tracks into this, first time I listened to it.
Then next time I got further in and "The Rip" which really does exactly that. And then come the driving techno rhythms of "We Carry On" and "Machine Gun". As a whole, maybe not totally mindblowing but seven tracks of excellence and several satisfactory moments of Portishead around them.

The London Book of the Dead. The Real Tuesday Weld.
This comes in a nice book. The music is classic TRTW and well worth seeing live (where yer man sings in sequence with several videos of the songs. Also this year a CD of Stephen's OST of "Dreams that Money Can Buy" that made me want to see the film.

    Patriarch's Blues. Victor Krummenacher.
I reviewed this previously. I think it may be my favourite CVB solo album.

    Glasvegas. Glasvegas.
Pete Wylie joins the J&MC and it may be grim up in Scotland if this slice of working class soap is to be believed. Remeniscent but not so derivative of the Jesus and Mary Chain (both scots but they went East Coast rather than Easterhouse). >choke<

    Leap Second. Okie Rosette.
Felix Costanza from Granfaloon Bus moves into an altcountry pop fest. Great to listen to if you need cheering up after listening to most of the above smiley - winkeye If you like Sufjan Stevens or The New Pornographers, check it out.

Glasvegas does seem to have been moved to the head of the class against other more talented bands...

It's like they're seen as the Coldplay of Scotland...when there's probably so much better music coming from there...
