Hi folks
If you heard Gideon's programme last night you may have heard the nice man play a song from the new Beatnik Filmstars LP. If you were a John Peel listener back in the 90's you might remember the band for recording five (five!) sessions for John Peel's show before they disappeared off the scene in 1998. The new album is out next week and is called "the Purple Fez 72 Club Social", and its an absolute corker. Think the old Beatniks style lo-fi attitude but now slowed down with harmonicas, slide guitar and accordians. This is an English band who have released 9 proper albums along with numerous out-take and singles compliations, have toured with the likes of the Flaming Lips and Guided By Voices - and these days there are few decent bands who can boast that kind of record. Many of those who have heard the new album think it is the band's finest hour. If you're looking for reference points, think Will Oldham or maybe a bit of Silver Jews. If you're interested, you can check out some of the new songs at the band's Myspace page www.Myspace.com/beatnikfilmstars, or take a peak at some of the ace videos up on that there You Tube..
Oh, and if you read Riley's message board too, apologies, cos may have read some of this before!
Many thanks
James
Nice one Gideon. The Beatniks are ace.
...and having bought the album, i can now say it's totally ace. Like a mellow Pavement album. Which incase you're wondering is a very good thing. Yes! Yes! Yes! Highly recomended.
