Hello vinyl-owning luddites:
So, confess: which records have you played at the wrong speed, for an entire side, and not noticed?
I sat through the whole of side A of Hergest Ridge by Mike Oldfield without realising it was on 45rpm. (Yes. I own Oldfield. I'm not ashamed.)
Ditto Cale & Riley's "Church of Anthrax".

Mr B once tested a cassette player on a PA system with a Leonard Cohen tape. It did not become obvious that it was playing extremely slow until the majorettes' music was put on when they came out to twirl their batons. A sight I wish I'd seen for myself.

When I was a very young kid, the only records I had were my dad's Beatles LPs. For years, I unwittingly played his copy of Magical Mystery Tour (double 7" EP) at 45rpm, and whenever idly singing any of those songs in the shower will still do them too quickly.

I got the classic Factory Sample double EP (FAC-2)and managed to listen right through two tracks each from Joy Division and The Duritti Column at 45 rpm without fully realising I was playing it at the wrong speed. Only when it came to the John Dowie tracks did it fully dawn on me, as his punk poetry sounded altogether too high pitched. This is still one of my most prized possessions though.

I once purchased a Recoil 12" EP called "Hydrology" at a record fair. The record had no indication as to what speed it should be played at so I listened to it both 45 and 33.3 RPM.
Given that it is entirely instrumental, I still, to this day, have no idea what's the correct speed to listen to it at.

Peel would have been proud of us!

It's quite easy to listen to the Residents at the wrong speed.

I reckon much of Durutti Column was *recorded* at the wrong speed.

I tried to introduce my parents to the joys of Kraftwerk one Sunday lunchtime, but managed to play the entire first side of Autobahn at 45rpm without noticing. They found this hilarious, and as far as I know, have never listened to Kraftwerk since.

I used to quite enjoy listening to "paradise city" by Guns n Roses from the album on 45 in my then girlfriends bedroom.
Seemed cool at the time (I was 17) so let me off!
