I reckon unless someone can come up with a band from Wakefield then they win, other than that it goes to Plymouth and so on.

According to Wiki, Wakefield has a population of less than 80,000 - bit of a difference?

As a Bristolian I always thought we hadn't come up with much in the way of music, at least nothing that had made much impact outside Bristol - I don't count the wurzels - although that was rectified somewhat in the 90s, but I can't think of anyone from Bradford, but I'm sure someone will put me right.

Bargeman - At this juncture I feel morally obliged to leap the Glorious North's defence. Whilst Bradford's output may not be comparable with Liverpool or Manchester, it can lay claim to the following acts and artistes, (although in some cases, it probably wishes it couldn't);
Tasmin Archer,
The Cult,
Fun-da-Mental,
Terrrorvision,
New Model Army,
the Poppy Factory,
Smokie,
and half of Embrace, (I believe).
In addition, Ade Edmondson was born in Bradford, and he did record "Living Doll" with Cliff Richard and the Young Ones.
Not an inspiring list I'll grant you, but there's one or two on there who've managed to record a half-decent tune in their time.

Lee - a couple of the Utah Saints had Bradford connections also.

I checked if TV Smith and Gaye Advert come from Plymouth (they don’t – they’re from Bideford, Devon). In Punk Rock – an Oral History, they’re interviewed and talk about how difficult it was to get to see gigs, having to travel 100 miles to Bristol. I’d say the lack of bands going that way wouldn’t help things in trying to get a music scene mobilised. When the Sex Pistols played Manchester Free Trade Hall that got loads of local people motivated and that helped to condense the scene.
Don’t know if Plymouth would be propelled up a chart for ‘value-added’ musical heritage but some places aren’t always helped by their geography. Can next year’s ‘In the City’ festival go there with Lammo?

Milton Keynes is pretty sparse at 227,800
I can only think of Big George (wrote the Have I Got News For You theme), there was a drum 'n bass outfit called Criminal Mindz who did alright but weren't very famous.
There's a pretty famous recording studio, not sure if much goes on there now though.

what a boob! I forgot Jonny Dankworth and Cleo Laine, although I'm not so sure they are originally from Milton Keynes...

In which film did "Terry meets Julie..." and thus inspire Waterloo Sunset?
They both did 'Far From the Madding Crowd' but don't know if that is THE film which inspired the song.

Imagine how different rock history might be if it was "Terry meets June"

Carlisle has pretty much produced zilch, in the way of great rock bands. The Daisychain Connection should have been huge - thought their support slot for the Beautiful South many years back would have been the kickstart, but sadly not.
The Twiggs produced a stunning, Beatles/60s influenced album called '20000 leaves under the tree', which should have been huge, but it was not to be.
In fact, Cumbria, generally, hasn't been a fertile breeding ground for bands that have 'made it', notable exceptions being British Sea Power and err.......It Bites......

I know it's a small town, but Truro hasn't produced -anything-. Roger Taylor went to school there (although is that really a point in its favour?), and that's all.
