Hello,
This will be short as I am cooking falafel for breakfast. Nice, try it.
Firstly confirmation that from early June the the show goes to 9 til midnight. I will pick up off the back of Marc Riley. The latter part is the best thing about. Though the real challenge is to keep people from sloping off to watch the Apprentice (whatever that is) on Wednesdays. I like a challenge though. It's all good news I reckon and I might look at a few tweaks of the show to go with the change of time.
Meanwhile on Monday the 26th we will have a three hour scottish band/artiste special. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Feel free to leave some more here. I'm ruling nothing out at this stage.
Thanks for keeping the board ticking over nicely.
Keep rocking
Gidx
Gid
If I promise not to moan about Deacon Blue will you play Marillion on Scottish night? (pretty please)
9-12 - that's great!
Scottish songs: How about something off John & Beverley Martyn's "Stormbringer" - the title track is up to scratch.
Gotta have some Mogwai.
And The Incredible String Band - First Girl I loved, or Puppies, or - well, take your pick.
Can we have some Camera Obscura, please? "My Jean" would probably be the most appropraite song as it is based on a Robert Burns poem after all.
And, whilst I'm on a Glasgow bent as it were; how's about "Saturday Night" by The Blue Nile?
I'd also like you to play "Screamadelica" from Primal Scream's "Dixie Narco" EP, but seeing as how it weighs in at a hefty 10:46 I'm guessing my chances are slim? I say, "Surprise me, sir!".
Falafel? For breakfast? Really?
I second the Camera Obscura
PS Ever tried lentil dahl for breakfast, cold, but with a hot fried egg or two on top? And maybe a couple of chopped green chilies as a garnish?
Great news about the new time. I can listen right to the end everyday and not feel guilty.
Scotch nite:
Boards Of Canada
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
King Creosote
I know someone else mentioned them a few days ago but how about Ballboy - maybe even something from the stuff they did for Peel back in the day. Please.
Ballboy thirded.
"Give Me Time" from Billy Mackenzie's Beyond the Sun album.
Rod Stewart
Sheena Easton
The Bay City Rollers
Simple Minds
Russ Abbott
Lulu
Isla St Clair
Jings!
Lord Rockingham's XI
A frivolous end-of-the-schoolday atmosphere has crept in, I fear.
If we're going for tracks with an inherent comedy-value, may I also request "Fan'dabi'dozi" by the Krankies?
No? Thought not.
Fran & Anna?
Oh there should be a ballboy track and what better than the "The sash my father wore" from the album of the same name?
But I've not heard the peel sessions, so in fact something from that would be a treat.
And there'll be some Belle and Sebastian, no doubt, so can I advocate "If she wants me", the third track from "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" - which is the best on the album and never gets any radio play cos it wasn't a single.
And - neatly bringing together two threads - Nazareth were Scottish. And their ballad "Love Hurts" must count as PowerWist.
All that! And how about post-Fire Engines Henderson pop from Win? "Unamerican Broadcasting" or the lager-ad song?
Steady on, someone will be suggesting Sidney Devine next.
A member of Nazareth (the one that died) used to live in the next street to us, here in Kirkcaldy.
Darrell Sweet - the drummer? He was supposed to be a pretty regular nice guy, if memory serves. Did you ever bump into him?
Not knowingly, but it was a pretty normal house, opposite the local corner shop, so must have seen him, certainly saw his wife around - she's still there.
I think you should get a special Scottish co-host for the evening, perhaps Dougie Vipond or Pat Nevin?
Belle & Sebastian, but play something a bit rare?
More votes for King Creosote, maybe some Vaselines, more jangle Primal Scream.
Don't forget My Latest Novel, please dig up the tunes they recorded for Steve Pacamac at Indian Summer 2006. Get 'Pretty in a Panic' on air.
ballboy, definitely.
Never heard any ballboy in over 5 years of listening to 6 Music. That's not right.
VG - I'd go with the boy Nevin and maybe Stuart Cosgrove in place of DV.
If we're going for a Scottish co-host for the night, and with a football bias, (a la Pat Nevin), I'd like to suggest that you plump for Archie McPherson instead.
You've got Scottish, you've got wist, (a commentator from a by-gone, rose-tinted era), and you've got duffer - all in the one presenter! What more could you ask for?
Just remembered; given that I hail from the "Glorious North", could we perhaps have the JAMMs' "It's Grim Up North"? A tear springs to my eye every time I hear that song.
Good shout Lee, but Archie is still with us. He was in fine voice for the UEFA cup final. Never one to mince his words - called it as he saw it. The better team won.
How did this end up being about football???
Apologies Bargeman. But Pat Nevin does know his music. And I always enjoyed reading Stuart Cosgrove in his NME days. Tenuous maybe, but not all football.
Cheers
Al
Fair enough. It does seem to be that music and football obsessions seem to go hand in hand for some reason.
Can I just throw in another music suggestion as anything seems to go at present; (Sir) Jimmy Shand - Bluebell polka. Fife's finest!
Prolapse! We must have Prolapse! Specifically Slash-Oblique. Bloody marvellous tune :o)
Has to be at least 3 tracks from The Associates.
Delgados - any track that Emma Pollock sings on.
Sons and Daughters
Can you play Ballboy's 'Why I hate Scotland?"
In a wistful mood, can we have Eddi Reader's 'The Shepherd's Song' - a tune that's haunted me since (I think) it was used in a martini advert back in the 70s!
Good news on the new show time - another 11 more moves and you'll be back where you belong!
I'm all for a bit of Prolapse... even though they were essentially from Leicester Uni, Mick Derrick has one of the most amazing singing/shouting/speaking accents I've heard. Plus, Linda Steelyard was a minx. How about 'Serpico'?
Also, you can placate me with a spot of Teenage Fanclub, Delgados...
Gid, if you really want to make me happy on what will be the eve of my 30th, you will play 'In A Big Country' by Big Country.
Hue and Cry - Labour of Love; fond memories of sitting at a plank of wood that served as a rather small desk with my then work colleague, (an aspiring opera singer no less) updating the manual sales ledger whilst singing this song.
Skids?
Pat Nevin stood beside me and Mrs Drujay at the free Belle and Sebastian gig in the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow about four summers ago. To our shame we were about the only sober people there by the time B&S came on (due to oversight rather than design). Probably just as well, as someone fell out of a tree (and I mean fell, and it was a 70ft conifer thing) about two yards from us and we were able to direct 3 off duty drunk nurses towards which particular prostrate reveller was the victim. Alcohol once again lived up to its life-saving reputation, however - he pretty much bounced and received only minor strafing injuries from the several branches he collided with on the way down. Needless to say, Nevin drew on all his European big night experience and kept a cool head as he joined us in peeing ourselves laughing.
On a slightly more relevant note, I have been threatened with similar arboreal-based violence if I do not request some Goodbye Mr MacKenzie.
Also
Groovy Little Numbers - 'Windy'
Absolutely anything by the Fannies
I'm going to be lazy and just list a bunch of songs I love and ones I think would sound ace on the radio -
Urusei Yatsura 'Siamese'
Foxface 'Monster Seas'
AC Acoustics 'Stunt Girl'
The Shop Assistants 'Somewhere In China'
Adventures In Stereo 'Down In The Traffic'
Superstar 'Every Day I Fall Apart'
Eugenius 'River Clyde Song' or maybe 'Mary Queen of Scots'?
And I'd echo earler calls for King Creosote, maybe something from The Pictish Trail or HMS Ginafore? Yes to the Fannies, and if B&S pop up could we have something from the earlier EPs please? 'Wrapped Up In Books' would be lovely.
Ta!
when pat nevin played for everton f.c. in the late 80's, im sure he once co-presented an evening radio show on liverpool's radio city or did i dream this?
Probably, he's done depping slots on Radio McScotty for Vic Galloway and the like.
Saw Barry Horne at a Nick Cave concert in Wolverhampton Civic 2 years ago. Everton players have great taste in music!
What about Smiths: 'William, It Was Really Nothing'? as that was supposedly written about the much missed Billy MacKenzie.
Some of Mr Ivor Cutler's records.
And 'Highland League' by I, Ludicrous again, please.
How about some Fangs? Marc R might be able to lend you a couple of ditties they did for his show recently. Great live too!
And 'Highland League' by I, Ludicrous again, please.
Good call Mr Gull, I too would like to hear that again.
Fangs are too loud, some of us have work in the morning.
That's duffer-age for you.
Rather Deacon Blue than Marillion!
What about:
Orange Juice: Poor Old Soul
Fire Engines: Candyskin
Restricted Code: First Night On
Scrotum Poles: Helicopter Honeymoon
Altered Images: Don't Talk to Me about Love
Strawberry Switchblade: Since Yesterday

The Squibs: Out on the Town
Edwyn Collins - Leviathan
Trashcan Sinatras - Weightlifting
The Royal We - All the Rage
Ivor Cutler - I'm Happy
Ostle Bay - Out Of Those Eyes
The Vaselines - Jesus Don't Want me for a Sunbeam
erm...
Sydney Devine - Tiny Bubbles
I'll get me coat
Scotland.
So small, yet so many quality musical exports. Why? I reckon it's the weather, long winters, boredom and alcohol. Any other contributing factors?
My top three requests:
Anything by The Associates. Possibly their hidden gem cover of Kites.
Anything by upcoming purveyors of genius-level epic pop Swimmer One -
Also really enjoying Rubens - Glasgow pop/electro duo also in ascendence up here. Puggies is the track you want
Glasvegas!!
The Royal We session for Marc Riley was an absolute treat.
Never has out of tune violin playing sounded so brilliant.
Please, Mr Coe.
