Hello,
There's a link on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ home page where you can post tributes to the great man.
Not only a towering and very important figure in music, he was also as good a broadcaster as I ever heard. Anyone who reckons themselves to be funny and engaging on radio should listen to one of his opening monologues for I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and realise how much they have to learn.
No-one could match him for wit and timing. And he was just as delightful when you met him, even if I did once fall asleep in his company in Birmingham.
RIP Humph.
Very sad news indeed.
Although I was a very late convert to ISIHAC, I have never laughed out loud as much as when listening to Humphrey Lyttelton's good-natured yet unquestionably filthy monologues on the show.
I sadly never met him nor managed to make it to a recording of ISIHAC, but as a listener, you got the feeling that you knew him as well as if he was a genuine, close friend of yours.
His love of the English language coupled with his incredibly quick wit and acute sense of timing made him the funniest man in broadcasting. However, I get the impression that he would never have been interested in hearing such praise for himself, (which kind of makes you like the man even more).
Not a difficult act to follow, an impossible act to follow.
Really nice obit in the Guardian today - By George Melly (obviously written a little while back)and some nice words from jeremy hardy too.
