Gid recently asked when we'd last purchased a physical album / CD from a proper, bricks-and-mortar shop rather than via an on-line retailer or down-loading-site-thingy.

    This got me thinking...

Many years ago, a mate of mine was foolish enough to purchase "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" by Oasis, which, perhaps unsurprisingly, he quickly discovered to be utter, un-adulterated rubbish.

So indignant was he with the album that he actually took it back to the shop he bought it from, complained strenuously about it's lack of quality and demanded a refund.

Needless to say, he was not-so-politely told to "do one". In a final act of defiance, he said, "Fine, but you can keep the ****ing CD because I'm not havng it", and he stormed out, leaving said album behind. Kudos to him for that.

Has anyone ever been successful in convincing a shop to give them a refund because an album was rubbish?

It's been a long, long time since I did that. I bought an album by Scream, simply because Dave Grohl was drumming on it and I was - at the time - completely obsessed with Foo Fighters.

However, a quick scan through the album (quite difficult on tape, I grant you) showed me that it was an album best left forgotten - so much so I've forgotten the name of it.

Needless to say, I took it straight back to Apple Stump Records in Cwmbran, South Wales and exchanged it for a Cud cassette single and an album by Morphine... I think the cover was blue.

Yes, bought proper albums from a proper shop just last week.
Fopp still exists in Glasgow and I picked up a copy of Ian McNabb's self-titled (but known as 'Superman') album for Β£2 to give to a colleague who I thought might enjoy it. Whilst I was there I also picked up 2 Smiths CDs for Β£5 to replace vinyl copies. Despite recently purchasing my first ipod I haven't really embraced downloading and still like to have physical evidence of my music !
