...mobile devices are available, set to shuffle and what are the first 5 songs (no cheating).
Persephone - Cocteau Twins
Next Time Round - Elvis Costello
Careful Boy - Blue Aeroplanes
Wolf Among Wolves - Bonnie Prince Billy
Where Were You - Mekons
(with apologies to Word Magazine)
Mine tried an ambitious Mark E Smith/Native Tongues Posse segueway
Hey Captain - The Broken Family Band
Iceland - The Fall
I left my wallet in El Segundo - A Tribe Called Quest
Hammer Song - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
Trying To Get To You - Elvis Presley. Whoever he is.
a space boy dream - belle and sebastian
mannequin - lush
drive in saturday - david bowie
time - david bowie
you got it - mudhoney
My ipod regularly gives me a couple from the same artist one after the other. Don't know why.
Pete
inthehills
I'm technically backward, but I asked my 6 yr old to pull an LP from the vinyl rack, and I got Nashville Skyline.
Pete, I once read a newspaper article.
It was about the shuffle function on people's MP3 players and how everyone thinks the randomness on theirs is rubbish. For example, the writer thought Simon & Garfunkel were out to get him: a terrifying thought. Apparently though true randomness throws up what we latch on to as these "clusters" all the time, so it's really a combination of the inability of our tiny minds to comprehend true mathematical randomness, and techno-paranoia.
I'd say two Bowie tracks out of five does suggest he's trying to stalk you through your iPod though.
Needed powering up but this is what I got:
King Bing - Baby Bird
She's in Broadstairs - Half Man Half Biscuit
Over You - Roxy Music
Top of the World - Fluke
The Narcotic Suite/Skylined - The Prodigy
I refuse to buy an iPod and I would not contemplate downloading music, even if I knew how to do it. Does this make me a duffer?
Of course it does. Well done. You really should e-mail the show with a formal duffer application.
Good game though (as Bruce would say). I'll join in eventually.
Gid
Agony - Ezio
Can't find a reason to let you go - Mark Mulcahy
These Girls - Ryan Adams
The man who told everything - Doves (where have they gone?!?)
All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away kit - Half Man, Half Biscuit
I believe that mp3 players work on a pseudo-random principle (i.e. it's not really random, but who can tell?). Also, mine has an option to change the "randomness" level.
Randomness... it's not what it used to be.

Parcel of Rogues - Delgados
New Paths to Helicon, Pt 1 - Mogwai
Perfect Time - Ride
Soldier's Poem - Muse
Still Ill (live) - The Smiths
Quite pleased with that I have to say. Mind you, I've done this several times on the Word Magazine website (really should fill my time more productively) and I always get a Ride track. Not complaining...but a little bit spooky.
Bit of a Chemikal Underground thing going on there too Mick.
Until recently I couldn't play this game because I had a load of radioplays on there that I couldn't work out how to exclude from the shuffle.
Public Witness Program - Fugazi
Episode 8 Part 1 "Christmas At Aldershot" - Hancock's Half Hour
Fail.

Hey, just like on the Word website !
- We Walk - REM
- Holiday - Green Day
- 68 Guns - The Alarm
- Have you seen your Mother Baby - Stones
- Electricity - OMD
Preference on shuffling seems to be given to tracks from 'proper' albums rather than compilations on my ipod, if that helps the random not being particularly random theory.
Till the End of the Day - The Kinks
Up-wards at 45ΒΊ - Julian Cope
C-C (You Set The Fire In Me) - Tom Vek
Acetone - Kenikie
Confusion - Electric Light Orchestra
Hmmm. Surely I have something slightly more contemporary lurking about on there? Maybe not. Ho hum.
I wouldn't dispute for a second the true mathematical randomness of the Shuffle function, but nevertheless, the first Library on my iPod appeared to be haunted by the handful of tracks from the Best of the Who I'd stuck on there, invariably playing at least one track with every listen, and often two back to back. Had to take 'em off in the end, especially after it dawned on me that the only thing I like about Who songs were the intros.
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi - RadioHead
Love & Peace - Tycoon Tosh & Terminator Troops
Oye Como Va - Santana
Op. 36, Enigma XIII Romanza - Elgar
Just the Smile - Rory Gallagher
Top game Swiftie, I'm starting to regret downloading the complete works of Elgar though....
Doesn't playing tracks from the same artist 1 after another prove that it is random?

Okey-doke:
1. Simon Mayo talks to Delia Smith
2. Radio 5 Book Panel, 14th Feb
3. Mark Kermode's Film Reviews, Feb 08
4. Gideon Coe Show, 27th Feb
5. Radiohead Story pt1
Bet I'm the only poster with Delia on their list. Let's hope so anyway.
I have all U2's albums put into order by throwing date, so, this is the result:
From Three:
1.1. Out of Control
2.2. Stories for Boys
3.3. Boy/Girl
From Boy:
4.1. I Will Follow
5.2. Twilight

Rotate Electrolyte - Squarepusher
Sellainen Tyttö (Aah..) - Apulanta
The Quickening - Lateef the Truth Speaker
The Twelve Steps - Spiritualized
Candidate - Joy Division
no guilty pleasures this time...
Yeap.. Delia Smith is quite a rarity.
strangers - portishead
Charlotte Sometimes - The Cure
Shipbuilding - Elvis Costello
Trouble - Pink
Party Fears 2 - The associates
One of these days I'll get the wherewithall to transfer the vinyl to the tiny device, and there'll no doubt be even more of an eighties bias.

So what's the biggest guilty pleasure so far then? Is it Delia? What do I win?
Like adthedoor I have no "iPod" or any such instrument of Satan. I do of necessity have a computer though and I do have a lot of music stored in "iTunes" (other music download services are available. Or are they, come to think of it?).
Anyway, the first five tracks to come up on party shuffle are:
Down On Mission Street - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Bread + Roses - Mr. Hudson & The Library
Apple Of My Eye - Ed Harcourt
We Could Walk Together - The Clientele
Everything Goes Wrong - Misty's Big Adventure

From my Itunes "Party Shuffle" feature:
MP3 of a blackbird singing and a Radio 4 guide to identifying it;
Last Orders - Richard Hawley;
New Year's Eve - The Walkmen;
Let Me Show You - K-Klass;
Little Green Bag - George Baker Selection.
A very fine party that would make.
This truly is an addictive game, (which sadly you can only really play the once!).
Any-hoo, my five were;
Futterman's Rule - The Beastie Boys
Leave Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ (Underworld Mix One) - The Chemical Brothers
The Bones of You - Elbow (which incidentally, I'd only put on the day before? Does that affect our "Degrees of random-ness" discussion?)
I Can't Explain - The Who - My Generation, (hope my iPod's not catching The Who bug)
One Big Happy Family - Bruce Ruffin
Reasonably pleased with that, especially as my wife has all her crappy albums loaded onto my iPod, (including The "Best" of the Suga Babes, The "Best" of Paul Young and the Bugsy Malone Soundtrack), so it could have been much worse!
Bugsy Malone Soundtrack, eh? I'd be proud to have that fine work on my ipod. Ranks above a guilty pleasure even in my mind.
All together now... "We could have been anything that we wanted to be..."
"...and it's not too late to change!"
No! I don't know the words. Honest I don't.
Miss you by feeder (which is a strange thing as it was only new track i had added to the ipod on my last synch...maybe not so random?)
Fighstar - we apologise for nothing
Fall out boy - thanks for the memories
and just when we thought some wierd "F" monster had taken over)
2nd movement of Gustav Mahler's second symphony
and lastly
Miles Davis... so what
Here Comes The Summer - The Undertones
It Beats For You - My Morning Jacket
Jus 1 Kiss - Basement Jaxx
Pearly Dewdrops' Drops - Cocteau Twins
Washington DC - Magnetic Fields
Some variety there and nothing too embarrassing I'd say - though others might view this differently.
Cocteau Twins were on the list that started this thread so they seem to be "of the moment."

iPod permanently on shuffle, so I've currently got
Juicebox - Strokes
Camera - Editors
Blue Moon Rising - Gomez
Porcupine - EATB
Rest my Chemistry - Interpol
Three Hours - Nick Drake
Vapour Trail - Ride
Alec Eiffel - Pixies
Adam & Joe Podcast - Identity Crisis
Idiot Wind - Bob Dylan
Don't like shuffle though.......
I love shuffle. It seems to be throwing up a lot of Madonna lately for some reason.
Your ipod and me - same reaction.
1. The Man With the Child in his Eyes - Kate Bush
2. Bons Baiseurs Du Poste - Les Sages Poetes de la Rue
3. The Mysteries - David Bowie/Erdal Kizilcay
4. 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton
5. The Black Angel's Death Song - The Velvet Underground
Ah.
Wel I got this:
Dead Quote Olympics by The Hives
Somebody got Murdered by The Clash
Billion Dollar Babies by Alice Cooper
Redemption Song covered by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones.
Quite a good selection actually!

Out of 2716 songs
When I'm Dead by Quasi
(Lovely)
Sticky Situation by Rob Schrab and Todd Bishop
School on Time by Rob Schrab and Todd Bishop
(great...now I look like I don't have any music except goofy songs from internet comedy shows)
Put Your Hand on the Computer by They Might Be Giants
(Okay, good. Something by my favourite band is in there)
and
Bedshaped by Keane
(Great... Now I just look like a tool)
Sigh...
Whenever my iPod gave me randomly the songs I wanted to hear in the order I wanted to hear them, I called it iPod iChing. (Aaargh! What am I doing?! I should be selling that idea to Apple ...) I lost my iPod on a train last year but its last 5 offerings were Alley Flowers by Jolie Holland, April Fools by Rufus Wainwright, Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands by Elliott Smith, Feats Don't Fail Me Now by Little Feat and Go Where You Wanna Go by The Mamas & The Papas. Which was as near perfect as I wished it to be. How do I know that listing? Because as it happened I wrote it down and sped home to make a new playlist. Happiness.
1. Hot Chip - Tchaparian
2. Arcade Fire - Ocean of Noise
3. Radiohead - Just
4. Emiliana Torrini - Today has been ok
5. The Sisters of Mercy - Temple of Love
My randomness is suitable humanly random, quite chuffed with the list. Might make for an interesting party sequence though.
This is going to be a sad indictment of my awful music collection:
1. God Only Knows (track only) - the Beach Boys, from the wonderful Stack O Tracks album.
2. Jamie (live acoustic version) - Weezer (Dusty Gems and Raw Nuggets)
3. Glorious Day - Weezer (The Green Album)
4. Electrobank - Chemical Brothers (Dig Your Own Hole)
5. Er... Shoot the Moon - Nora Jones (Come Away With Me). It was a present, and Come Away With Me is perfect music for the bath.
So - not too bad. I thought, given the proportions involved, there would be more Beach Boys - of 3277 items, 406 of those are Beach Boys tracks...
Ok here go the first five on my Ipod this morning:
1) Guided by voices - smothered in hugs
2) Jeff Buckley - you & I
3) Foo fighters - kiss the bottle
4) Eels - i like birds
5) The cure - pictures of you
sweet black angel - the rolling stones
breed - nirvana
hands away - interpol
survivalism - nine inch nails
asleep on a sunbeam - belle and sebastian
The last one rather jars with the impending sense of doom the first four were nicely cultivating...anyway, at least my christina aguilera MP3s are still secret.
Me Plus One - Annie
Round & - Kid Spatula
King Holer - Fujiya & Miyagi
Hi-Tech Jazz - Underground Resistance
The W.A.N.D. - Flaming Lips
Hmm - looks as if all I listen to is electronic music. Not the case, but you gotta go with the 'shuffle' flow!
My five were:
1) All You Need Is Love - The Beatles
2) Flip Flop Rock - Outkast
3) Take A Little Time - Les Rythmes Digitales
4) Rhagluniaeth Ysgafn - Gruff Rhys
5) Dosed and Became Invisible - Joy Zipper
As I started writing the Beatles entry the opening bars to Strawberry Fields started on Lammo's show!
Yes, this is a wonderful game, so here's my effort:
Reach Out : DJ Zinc
1000% : Fatima Mansions
Dudanotak : A Hawk And a Hacksaw
Ban the Gin : The Victorian English Gentlemens's Club
Cold War : Death From Above 1979.
Phew... that's really good, considering the horrors that lurk on the thing (though no actual Horrors I think).
alan_lloyd : there's load more download services, bleep.com (my favourite), indiestore.com, emusic.com etc, etc.
OK here goes (with no cheating!)
1. Jenny Ondioline (Part 1) - Stereolab
2. She's a Lady - Pulp
3. Marian - Nouvelle Vague
4. White Palms - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
5. Say Yes - The Blood Arm
I love reading people's shuffle lists!
"Westward Bound"-Mark Hollis
"No God Only Religion"-Spiritualised
"What in the World?" -Dukes of Stratospheare
"Smash It Up (Pts 1 & 2)-The Damned
"Brain Stew"-Green Day
I've had my "3rd Gen" pod a couple of years now. Works very well. was a bargain-long story, too dull to relate. Astonishing to think how it looks clunky next to new models, and how I've actually grumbled that it "only" has a 20 gig capacity....o tempore, o mores...

On random
"Galvanise" The Chemical Brothers
"Buy it is bottles" Richard Ashcroft
"Held Down" De La Soul
"Thank You" Led Zepplin
"Dark Light Enough" Duke Spirit
I've had my Ipod for nearly 2 years and never used shuffle. Good idea - it finds songs I never really listen to.
Johnny Cash - Peace in the Valley
Zwan - Of a Broken Heart
Pendulum - Out Here
Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
Editors - All Sparks
Lucky it didn't pick up any of my girlfriend's stuff..

1) The Kinks - A Well Respected Man
2) The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
3) Art Brut - Pump Up The Volume
4) Kim Wilde - Kids In America (we're rehearsing the 6 Music band at the moment which is why this is on here)
5) Pulp - Lipgloss
Not too shabby! this is a mighty fine game x

Thanks for the information headbones - glad to discover that the evil megacorp doesn't have a complete monopoly in download services. Actually the only reason I have iTunes on my PC is that occasionally I go to gigs where I'm given tokens for a number of free songs. Otherwise I tend to eschew downloads since as a card carrying duffer I prefer to have a nice piece of vinyl or a shiny CD with artwork and everything, rather than just a file on a computer.
Reminds me - I currently have 20 free songs which I need to choose in the next few days before the codes expire. Any recommendations for interesting stuff will be gratefully received, especially tracks that aren't available in any physical format.
Am I possibly the last listener to not have an ipod type device yet? That's got to be a big step towards dufferdom.......?
I've only just got hold of a mobile phone that has picture and downloading facilities in the last few months aswell..........
