With regard to the ‘men respond intellectually, women respond emotionally’ p.o.v: personally I think it is a red herring, but just assuming it’s not…
I’ve been gigging and collecting records/cds/downloads for decades. When I started out as a teenager it was with a group of people – boys and girls – all of whom, to my recollection – tended to come away from the gig with the same reaction (that was great/that was not etc). Those of us who were in bands took more interest in the type of guitar, the performance, the amps etc, those who weren’t took more interest in the bar, the crowd, the stage-diving. It wasn’t divided along gender lines. We were just all music fans together.
As myself and my group of friends have aged we have all generally been drawn to similar albums or bands. This is because we share a certain taste in music. Again. It’s not a gender thing. I don’t listen to Green Day and start to weep or scream or laugh. My husband doesn’t put on his Neil Young records and dissect the quality of the production or the impact of the location of the recording studio. We just like the music.
All of which leads me back to my original point that, unfortunately, this line of thinking has been thrown out in order to deflect from the real issue, which is a poor decision on the part of a manager or management team (I don’t claim to know if these decisions are made democratically or by a benevolent dictator).
6music used to be a haven for the genuine music lovers amongst us. It used to be a place where we could go to listen to music of quality because we love music. There are other radio stations for people who want the DJ to take the limelight. Personality based radio has its place. But does it have to here?

    Shame.

Let's face it, shifting Gideon out and putting Lamb in makes great sense in terms of increasing listeners. He's in the Evans/Moyles mould and there is clearly a massive audience for that kind of thing. So, if that's what the management are focussed on then those of us who are appalled by the changes haven't a hope of getting what we want.

However, if Lesley Douglas et al really are interested in the integrity of 6Music as a channel for music lovers then they will realise that they are swapping a music-loving audience for one more interested in pub-style chat, jokes and phone-in fun.

Just wanted to make sure that you folks were all aware of the online petition to attempt to persuade the decision makers at 6Music that all is not as it should be.

There is also a facebook group and a myspace page.

I'll leave it to your ingenuity to find them.
