Hello there,
Back in the UK and about to make some soup using old broccoli, sweet potato and ingredient x (probably garlic).
Can I firstly thank Andrew Collins for minding the shop while I was gazing out to see and thinking about.. well nothing really. As I've said before there are three things you want from someone looking after the show
1 - respect it
2 - deliver the goods on air
3 - be far too busy and successful elswhere to be seen as a long-term threat.
AC ticks all three boxes.
So, tonights show will include a reasonable story about listening to Spandau Ballet but that aside, expect the usual. Records, sessions, concerts, duffing, stories about Mark E Smith's fridge.
Here's something else though, I visited my local independent record shop today (Rough Trade London w11) and they are just publishing their best albums of 2007 top 100.
This is always useful as it can lead to good arguments, remind you of records you may have forgotten about and also point you towards the ones you've never heard of. It's especially useful when so many records are released in a year, many of them without the backing of a major label or the radio play they deserve.
I'll play a couple of tracks from their top ten albums tonight and I will ask you to nominate your favourite albums of the year. As many and as few as you like.
This is not an original idea. That is an understatement. I'm just interested and you can point me towards records I may have overlooked or dismissed or not had time to listen to
Please start the list here...
thanks
Gidx

Interpol - Our Love to Admire
The Bees - Octopus
Maybe I never paid enough attention this year.

Easy Tiger - Ryan Adams (best gig also, last week Manchester)
Sky Blue Sky - Wilco (best gig cancellation, 3 days notice/2 weeks ago Manchester)
The Shepherd's Dog - Iron and Wine
Hello Love - Broken Family Band
Gagagaga - Spoon
Casadaga - Bright Eyes

A few I've really like so far:
Siouxsie - 'Mantaray'
Phoenix and the Oracle of Zahyrus - 'Rituals for the Renewal and to Destroy the Matrix'
IAMX '-The Alternative'

Devendra Banhart -' Smokey Rolls down thunder Canyon'

Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
Gravenhurst - The Western Lands
and quite possibly the best of all:
The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army (eclipsed Neon Bible, that's for sure).

Had you been in your local independent record shop last Friday, rather than idling away the time gazing wistfully at the ocean, you could have seen the lovely Jaymay doing an in-store to promote her new album Autumn Fallin'. Would even have bought you a beer afterwards. Too late now though. Do have a listen to the record anyway, if you haven't done so already - there's plenty of potential Wist Wagon material on there.
GoodBooks' debut album Control deserved a bit more attention, not least from this radio station. Ditto albums by The Clientele and Paris Motel. And it was heartening to see and hear Edwyn Collins back with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Again (a triumphant comeback gig at Dingwalls too).
Otherwise there hasn't been much that's excited me this year but it's probably just that, like The Valour Gull, I haven't been paying enough attention.

Its been a very good year for old people like me:-

They also have a total of 11 wives between them.

The greatest album of 2007 in my opinion is Tori Amos - American Doll Posse
AMAZING album!!

Can I throw Battles' "Mirrored" into the mix? The 'live' experience was even better.

I don't know, seems to roll round earlier and earlier every year. Have people forgotten the true meaning of writing things in list form?
Asobi Seksu - Citrus
iLiKETRAiNS - Elegies to Lessons Learnt
And possibly some upbeat music somewhere along the line, but it has slipped my mind.
Oh, I remember - MIA's Kala is probably my record of the year.

Rachel Unthank and the Winterset - The Bairns
Swimmer One - The Regional Variations
Klaxons _ Myths of the Near Future

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder
Maps - We Can Create
Boxer - The National
Both of my hoped-for 'big hitters' were good but had been previously bettered: Interpol and Bright Eyes.

Surely, best debut LP of the year has to be:
Bat for Lashes - Fur & Gold ?
And how about these Jarvis Cocker: The Jarvis Cocker Album and The National: Boxer
Great call on the broken family band - Gid, why you still no play?!!

bother, totally forgot that Bat for Lashes was out this year, I thought it was 2006? Anyway, yes that's one too.

What about the criminally ignored "I Wish I Could Have Loved You More" by Candie Payne? A superb album.
Link to this forum: Albums of 2007... and don't roll your eyes at me.
It's maybe a bit soon for me to answer this as I'm generally a year or so behind with albums, however the one I particularly loved this year was the Editors album. Sadly not as hip or obscure as some of the other choices, but there you go.
I also liked Malcolm Middleton and Midlake, but maybe that was last year, in keeping with me being a year behind. I only bought it this year, so does that count?

Let's argue.
Candie Payne is not very good. She tries to capture a sound of yesteryear and in doing so, becomes only a pale impersonation of her heroes.
I say the Go! Team create a retro sound more successfully.

Battles - Mirrored
M.I.A - Kala
And a couple of compilations......Italians Do It Better - After Dark
Pris Thomas - Cosmic Galactic Prism

Fiery Furnaces
The Hedrons
Marnie Stern
Spoon
Jets Overhead `
Laura Veirs
Kristin Hersh
Damn! I could go on for ever.

Yes the Spoon album took me by surprise. So much so I went out and got their other stuff and its all just as good.
They've always had a reputation as the "world's best support band". The bonus disc of weird stuff is great also.

The Valour Gull; Candie Payne is clearly inspired, (some may say derivative but not I), of the hey-day of British / European 60s girl pop, with a dash of John Barry / SG. I think her singing, writing and, having seen her live, performance renders your statement, (namely her being "not very good"), quire impotent. She may not be to your tastes but she is clearly good at what she does. She is very talented.
The Go! Team in comparrison, came back this year with an album that was simply a carbon copy of their first with precious little invention or variation. The only possible exception to this is the track with Chuck D, by far the best song on the album. As for playing live? I've seen them three times, and when they played the Ritz in Manchester this year, a) they used too many backing tracks for my liking (can a live band no-longer afford to have a horn section these days [discuss]), and b) they sounded god-awful. It was like they were playing different songs at the same time aided by a sound engineer who had just been recruited out of school.
I love(d) the Go! Team but I fear they will soon be forgotten, with only their first album ever played in future. Which is a shame because they were so fresh and original when I first heard / saw them back in 2004.
Touche!

Agree with those of you who mentioned Asobi Seksu, iLiKETRAiNS and Gravenhurst but the best album of the year by a country mile for me is:
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime
Link to this forum: Albums of 2007... and don't roll your eyes at me.
1st half of year the awesome LP was a 'Robbers & Cowards' by Cold War Kids.
2nd half of year rule 'Mantaray' album od Siouxie Sioux.
Many of 'Seconds Albums Retreat' given not to much LPs.

Hmm... This discussion topic has thrown me somewhat.
I was going to contribute when i realised that having bought a lot of new music this last year, i have actually only bought individual tracks, not albums. Such is the freedom of choice of online downloads!
This then led me to think what was the last full album i bought, on an actual CD? It turns out that it was the self titled and quite simply stunning The Good, The Bad and The Queen.
However, I am undeterred by my selective shopping. So may i offer the following theory:
"Should I have bought the rest of an album from the tracks I downloaded, then i can safely presume that current albums from...
Paris Motel,
Emma Pollock,
Siouxie Sioux,
The Duke Spirit,
Nine Black Alps,
Kate Walsh,
The New Pornogrophers,
The Kissaway Trail,
...are (probably) all very good indeed, and i'd recommend them to anyone!"
There, reckon i got away with people not thinking i'm too tight to buy full albums....

i have listened to lots of OK albums this year (mostly after having heard the singles or tracks on 6music, of course!) but only 2 really good ones (to my ears and mind):
Aereogramme - "My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go" (sadly the band split up in the summer having tired of hitting their collective head against a series of critical and commercial brick walls);
Jesu - "Conqueror". A simply awesome record in which Justin Broadrick, formerly of West Midlands Death Metal/Techno pioneers Godflesh, goes all poppy and happy and accidentally makes shoegazing acceptable in the 21st century. Turn this up very loud and it's like you're swimming in aural honey. Fantastic - my album of the year without a doubt.

Album of the year (without question!):
Radiohead, "In Rainbows"....wow....
Other Albums of the year in no particular order:
Kings of Leon "Because of The Times"
LCD Soundsystem "Sound of Silver"
Underworld "Oblivion With Bells"
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss "Raising Sand"
Jose Gonzalez "In Our Nature"
Burial "Untrue"
What about disappointment of the year?
Sadly has to be "White Chalk" for me.....

Hi all
Greenwich corespondent here
I'd like to support xseawitch with her nomination of Siouxsie and her new album 'Mantaray' which I also think is a good name of a album. I think this would make a great name for a car, however I digress.
I would also like to put into the mix Jamie T with his album 'Panic Prevention' which although I love Siouxsie and have done since 1979, all albums bought lovingly on vinyl, I feel Jamie T has produced something that will stand the test of time which is more that can be said for todays music. Duffer points please.

For me this has been a great year for albums with many existing bands coming back with good albums and some equally good ones from new bands. The highlight of the year for me personally is the Battles album. It's just so different to pretty much everything else out there at the moment and all the better for it.
I'd go for the Justice album "Cross" as a close second place. It'll no doubt be classed as a "very 2007" sounding album in years to dcome but these guys have managed to breathe a bit of life into a very stagnant dance music scene and the album is a testament to just how good dance music can be.
My third placed album would be the Kissaway Trail. They have somehow managed to combine the best bits of the arcade fire with all i love about polyphonic spree and deliver it with a mere 5 members! It's an album i continue to be enetertained by on each listen and a different song becomes a favourite each time too. It helps that they're also brilliant live.
Honourable mentions for me this year should also go to:
Radiohead
Arcade Fire
Modest Mouse
LCD Soundsystem
Little Ones
Kings of Leon
Alloy Mental
Animal Collective
Oppenheimer
Jetplane Landing

I am rubbish at remembering what albums came out in what year so here's my probable top 10.
SFA - Hey Venus
Gruff Rhys - Candylion
Fabienne Delsol - Between you and me
Au Revoir Simone - The bird of music
Bat for Lashes - fur and gold
Candie Payne - I wish I could have loved you more
Pony Up - Make love to the Judges....
Maximo Park - Our Earthly Pleasures
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Emma Pollock - Watch the Fireworks
Lets not hear any more rubbish about Candie Payne being crap.

'Fur and Gold' by Bat for Lashes, without a doubt. Every time I go to take it out of my stereo I just press 'play' instead!

Because i listen to so much music, both new and old, sometimes my favourite albums of any given year include re-issues or best of's: do these count? I'll add them anyway, so for better or worse, my favourite albums of 2007.... Bjork - Volta. Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future. Sigur Ros - Hvarf-Heim. The Enemy - We'll Live And Die In These Towns. Burial - Burial. Enter Shikari - Take To The Skies. Interpol - Our Love To Admire. Dizzee Rascal - Maths & English. M.I.A. - Kala. Led Zeppelin - Mothership. Hi Gid,
writing this now (though when else could I be writing this, but listening for the first time yadda, yadda, tomorrow).
Anyway some of my albums of the year (and possibly last December, it gets a bit blurry) are
1) Shins - Wincing the night away
2) Cherry Ghost - Thirst for romance
3) Memories and dust - Josh Pike
4) Decemberists - Crane Wife
5) Roddy Woomble - My secret is...
Hope you forgive any 2006 interlopers.
Love the show,
Dave

Maybe I'm getting old, but there aren't too many albums that have really grabbed me by the knackers this year. Interpol's 'Our Love To Admire' is a masterpiece, and Beirut's 'The Flying Club Cup' hasn't been off my car stereo for over a month now, so I guess I'll nominate these two!
Cheers
