    Is my Hair Alright, etc.

    Hello,

It's 14:06 and I've just realised I haven't sorted out a new theme tune for the new show. That is just an example of the relaxed approach to the show. Some may call it lazy, I call it "relaxed".

Anyway, looking forward to it. And as you can see we now have our own section on the message board. Long standing listeners will remember that we had one of these in the 1980s. Now it's back and I promise you one thing: I will post at least once a week. Maybe more depending on time restraints/childcare issues/whether I've paid the broadband bill. Hold me to it.

While I'm making rash promises you can also now watch my manifesto for the show via video link on this very website. You will notice several things

    1 - I am in a public house
2 - I look like I've been on nights for ten years
    3 - I need a haircut
4 - my gym is not as busy as it should be.

I also outline some ideas for the show but now I'm asking you simply

What do you want from the show?

The Â鶹ԼÅÄ Archive of sessions/concerts/whistle test/rock goes to college/glastonbury/6music sessions etc is still very much part of the show. What would you like to hear?

Added to that what records would you like to hear.

Basically the show will be lots of music with a bit of talking about such things as
"my neighbours cat looks like Ron Mael"
"I've seen inside Mark E Smiths fridge"
    and
"I had an argument with Chris De Burgh"

In fact those are the only areas we cover.

Anything else you want from this show, let me know.

    Keep rocking as ever.

    Gid

Gideon, I'd not want you to have to start your new show without any posts on your new message board! You know you've made it when you get one of these.
2 - I look like I've been on nights for ten years
which is why you have to do your drinking alone during the morning, while businessmen drop in for coffee?
No sidekick, no themetune, break the mould!

Wouldn't mind hearing an OGWT appearance from PIL - "Careering" was a highlight if memories serves correct. And how about some DCL Locomotive - "King Midas in Reverse"?

PS All the best for tonight's first venture.

To be honest Gid, I loved your daytime theme tune and think it would still sound good in the night time hours.

But, if you want to freshen it up, dig up, if you can, 'Free Ourselves' by the Imprints. although I've never found it and I doubt it's anywhere these days - it's from the stone age, so probably isn't even on a dusty C90.....

As for the sessions, please dig out The Fall's 'Australians In Europe', along with pretty much every C86 band session you can lay your mits on, but with a bit of bias towards the Stars of Heaven, Mighty Mighty, The Brilliant Corners and McCarthy.

    Bring on the night.............

As for features- With a new night time audience to evaluate I'd like to hear a return of the 6music census (how many pairs of slippers do you own?)

Smells of paint in here, and is that a new carpet? Nice.

Whenever anyone asks me what I want to hear my brain normally crashes and I can't think of anything, but after hearing today of the sad and very unexpected death of Killing Joke/Prong/Ministry bassist extraordinaire Paul Raven at only 46 I'd love it if you could crowbar in anything from Killing Joke that isn't 'love like blood'.

Looking forward to the show! Who needs a theme tune?

Thanks Gid, and RIP Pauls Raven and Fox :o(

    Dear Gid

Just wanted to wish you luck for tonight's show, and commend you on the new "Strummer" look you're rocking. Good hair Sir!

Did Alan Sherman ever appear on The Whistle Test by any chance? If so, I'm sure he would have performed a sterling version of "Hello Mudda..." that would be well worth dusting off.

Excellent manifesto Mr Coe - and welcome to a new phase of nighttime. I, and the GCAS, will be listening intently and thinking up archive choices both fabulous and dire in equal measure. As a starter for ten, and not sure if they ever did a session but they fit the 'tapes you once had but got mangled and you've never thought to use your nouse to get a replacement' category, could we have something from The Heartthrobs? Belly-esque glory, creepy weirdness, and a bit of a 'whatever happened to them' element which is always welcome.
    Good luck! Rachel

    Dear Mr Coe,

I am having an issue, as shared by other members of GCAS currently, that our work internet browsers do not allow the use of listen again. I have spoken to said employers about this, and apparantly it is a 'security risk'. I never would have thought that the new Gideon Coe Show could be classed as a security risk...?!

The only alternative is to get the company to also shift it's working time, like yourself, by 12 hours, then i can listen live once more! Problem, solved.

Best of luck with tonight's show.

As a badge-carrying Duffer I wouldn't say I like change, but let's bin the Webb Brothers (far too "oom-pah!") and get something a bit more night-time. Maybe just the sound of a crackling hearth, Newsnight in the background, bubble and squeak gently sizzling on the Aga hob. Somewhere, an owl hoots.

But firstly can you tell them to make yesterday's show available on listen again? Boff!

I agree, play that Webb Brothers tune in full and then retire it as a theme tune.

The show will obviously need time to bed in but I would add at this very early stage that I think Gideon should go easy on the live music and play more new music because, apart from Marc Riley, no one else is going to.

Last night's show is there. Load any show in the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio Player, then click on Monday from the Gideon Coe list. For some reason, the old links are on Gid's page, but last night's show is on the player.

Oh, and top work, sir. Loved listening last night on the way back from the Super Furries in Nottingham. Great mix of music, no patronising banter. I can see a similar listener-DJ relationship developing to that previously held by John Peel.

I thought the ratio of live music about right and there will never be enough new stuff played.

It was very pleasant to here a mellifluous voice into the wee hours. The best presenters create a bubble and the Coe bubble is a nice place to be at the end of a hectic day.

Am listening again to last night's show and am enjoying it, indeed. Have to agree on comments about live music though - cut that right down, i say, and more new stuff. This may be sacriligous (sic) stuff, but i GENERALLY think live music sounds a bit below par on the radio - and at worst it can actually rankle. Some of the Costello and pumpkins stuff last night got a bit unlistenable for me, or am i just a delicate ear?

    Hi Gid

What records would I like to hear?

How about some pre-CBS Mott the Hoople? There are some brilliant Â鶹ԼÅÄ sessions kicking around as well as the regular albums and new live stuff emerging all the time from the greatest live band ever (debate?). And some Ian Hunter.

Also some great Cockney Rebel Â鶹ԼÅÄ sessions and a handful of quality albums to work with.

How about some early Dr Feelgood, Hot Rods, Slits, X-Ray Spex, Wire - some of the more obscure punk stuff - Eater, Lurkers, early Tubeway Army?

Underplayed classic indie - Bauhaus, Pale Saints (isn't their third album one of the best 'lost' albums ever?), Xmal, Dead Can Dance, Heart Throbs, Perfect Disaster, Loop, Telescopes, The Loft (of course), Pastels, Bodines, Subway Label, Sarah Label, Cheree label ... (label features?)

Wouldn't object to a bit of goth, and a bit of noise ...and more from up and coming bands who seldom get their stuff heard on the radio.

And, of course, some great stuff that I have never heard before!

Sort it out - and all the best with the new show,

    Adam

I love this show. I can sleep through almost the whole thing, just like the good old days of John Peel. No irritating shouty blokes to be heard anywhere. Now I just need to remember to record it so I can hear some great music, for a change. Thanks for playing British Sea Power. That put a smile on my face and made me pump up the volume at such a late hour.

    Keep up the good work.

Yes, I thought last night's show was well balanced, as well. It's good that the archive session tracks are spaced throughout the programme and the full session aired in the style of the John Peel shows of yore (as has been happening with Marc Riley's 'Peel by request' feature). I felt for a long time that 6 Music was rather neglecting the session archive by seemingly playing the more familiar artistes and tracks and repeating them often. I'm glad that's being addressed now.
The one thing I feel would add to the night's proceedings would be the occasional live session from bands/artistes - always enjoyable on the mid-morning show. Is that a possibility?

Starting with the negative – i.e. less of this please! Personally I’ve never particularly enjoyed the lengthy live performances that have traditionally dominated this part of the 6 schedule. Partly this was due to often not liking the featured bands, although I’d have to say that it’s rare for live performances by bands I like to come across well on the radio. Sessions are a little better as they are usually better recorded & are often unusual or quirky takes of songs – so it’s often interesting to hear them dug out. Saying that I’d prefer they were just mixed in rather than dominating 10-15 minutes of airtime & with archive sessions don’t feel compelled to play the whole session in a show as it’s good to just hear a random session tune interspersed with other songs.

Onto the positive. Firstly albums. I love albums so stuff like the great lost album was brilliant (back in the day when it was 3 songs off a single album) & I must have bought a fair few albums after hearing them featured. It’s always great to hear album tracks played on the radio as it doesn’t happen enough so frequently a bands best work gets buried. I’d say it’s up to guys like Gid to stop this happening. Secondly, new music. It was great to hear Panda Bear on the show, ditto for Okkervil River who's been played recently. That said I already know their music – so I’m looking forward to the next great band that Gid introduces to me. It’s happened plenty of times in the past & hopefully will continue to do so…

Basically just keep it fresh & about the music and you won’t go far wrong!

Yeah, great show Mr Coe, really good to hear you less playlist-bound. I loved it - but - must agree with those that say the Live stuff isn't working. I too have never really felt live music works on radio. [Chin-Stroke bit alert...] Unlike seing it on telly, which makes you feel what it's like to be there, radio makes you feel a bit 'excluded' from the gig. Ya get me? This effect is doubled if the 'live' recording is from 27 years ago.

I guess 6 has always put 'live' on cos the Â鶹ԼÅÄ has an amazing array of live recordings, so I understand why they've done it, but I think if it interrupts the flow of your otherwise super show I'd say get rid of it, or at least cut it down to one track. Clasic sessions, of course, are always welcome though.

But a great show nonetheless, all power to your elbow sir

    Steve

    Hello,

Thanks for the comments so far and please keep them coming (as they say in radio). There seem to be some concerns about the live music. This will always be part of the show. It's a big part of the station's remit and - as you may be aware - I'm quite a fan of the station's remit. I know some concerts work better than others but I've especially enjoyed hearing the Ruts, Elvis Costello, Smashing Pumpkins, Seth Lakeman and Tom Robinson in concert over the past couple of nights and hopefully some of the rest of you have too. We thought about splitting the live songs up but I think this might make the show somewhat fragmented and, as Frank Spencer would say, bitty.

That said, at this early stage nothing is set in stone. We'll see what works and change what doesn't and we'll do that taking listener comments and requests on board. Meanwhile, I'm chasing all sorts of concerts and sessions. I'll be back in the archive dungeon today.

    Keep rocking
    Gid

Just to say I very much enjoyed your Tuesday show on "listen again" Keep it up - nice to be able to blot out you know who's drivel with somone who actually likes music smiley - smiley I normally use Lard to fill the gap when I am getting sick of the play list, and now I have 2 shows to play with!

Haven't heard the Boos in the while.

I was interested to note in your trailer you said you looked forward to playing stuff you couldn't play during the day time (presumably a lot less Kate Nash dribbling on about the fact she has some skin) and the Lamb merely said he looked forward to not having to work late. I think that says an awful lot about your relative interests in music. this station is still about the music right?

Does seem at time that the daytime before Lamaq is on is getting more and more about what the bloke down the pub read in the Sun. You can also always tell when a DJ hasnt got a clue as they read out the band name as the title of the track - I always remember a particularly lame Radio 1 lunchtime DJ who's name I forget (I imagine they have been fired) read out more than once that that was "Rocks" with "Primal Scream" when it was in the charts. Primal who? Never heard of them. *groans*.

I want to stick up for the live music; maybe it's because the first lot was Elvis Costello and it took me back 20 years to when I was 'there', but I enjoyed hearing a solid chunk of live Elvis C.

My gig-going days are now largely behind me, so I can gig-go vicariously through 6music!

As well as classic 80s stuff I would like to hear more music, old and new that I haven't heard before - I'm not that musically in touch so it shouldn't be too difficult.

I'm with the Bargeman. Enjoyed Elvis's live tracks on Monday and thought The Ruts performance from last night's show was also cracking.

I'm sure once Gid's had a chance to really go to town on the archives many a gem will be unearthed. The live stuff is good too as you often get the energy that didn't translate as much in the studio. Hearing songs your familiar with done with a different edge, etc, is also surely in keeping with the spirit of both Gideon's show and 6 music?

I have massive and often embarrasing gaps in my musical history largely due to an eighties dead-end diversion with poodle haired guitar widdlers. I used to get frustrated sometimes when the morning show would feature a great lost track I'd never heard before, but a more familiar one would win. Hopefully, the new evening freedom will let me hear lots more suprising stuff, both new and old.

    Bring it on Professor Coe!

could i put in a (perhaps predictable) plea for more vocals of the female kind, records wise? GREAT shows so far, naturally, but there was rather a lot of boys wasn't there? Now we come to expect this but could we go a bit heavier on the ladies, perhaps, of the musical variety? er, mind gone blank territory now, but how about some records or live stuff from: Liz Phair, Kate Bush, Goldfrapp, kristen hersh/muses... And I would love to hear session stuff from Echobelly if it's lying around.
To contradict myself entirely, could I also request the odd song from The Broken Family Band? Too good to be true, those guys.

Still the best show on the radio...whatever the time. And you've just played A Flock of Seagulls live in Hitchin. The rest really might as well give up.

I'm another one for the live tracks, although for entirely personal reasons. I was in the audience for a remarakble number of those played so far and, as I don't get out much any more, it reminds me of the heady days of youth.

I'm not a particular fan of the live session--I feel it can alienate
a body, especially if you know you don't like the artiste(s). I am
not inclined to listen at all at that point. Sometimes an artist can
impress me with a version of something I like already, but generally,
    not.
I feel that you have undoubtedly got the wherewithal to run a
show with your own material (read you as you and the team smiley - smiley ). I
hear you saying live is part of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ. So be it, but maybe not as
    much please.

As for the hair, I agree with other punter, although I felt more of a
    Strummer/Cornwell, younger of course!

    Apart from that, impressive...

One last thought....any chance of finishing up a bit earlier--I'm whacked staying up this long each night. Or better still, leave all the sessions till the last hour, put your own material on up front smiley - winkeye

A session suggestion for you. Any chance of digging up some vintage Divine Comedy? I remember a session they did for Stuart Maconie on Radio 1 back in 97 around the time of 'A Short Album About Love' and prior to that Neil was on with Mark and Lard. He also popped up with Sean Hughes in 99 when he was covering for Jonathan Ross on Radio 2. Then there's assorted live stuff - a Fin De Siecle-era tour went out on Lamacq Live and they were also at the first One Big Weekend style Radio 1 thing in 98.

Just been using the listen again facility and I'm writing to thank Mr Coe for playing the track by "Holy F" absolutely brilliant -one listen and I've ordered the album online.
Sir I salute you; perhaps this is why you,ve moved to nights(not sure you could get away with this on your much missed daytime progamme?)

I'm with zcrookes for more girlies, and equally utterly unable to name any, but Gid knows his stuff, I'm sure he'll think of something.

In the interests of sexual equality, my cat looks like Bjork.

Hello-enjoying the show thus far-dovetails nicely with Maconie/Radcliffe on Two.

What IS the theme tune, and by whom?

Also, any chance of some Punishmeny Of Luxury?

hurrah for the girls! yes, BFL would be awesome, particularly for live tracks. saw her last night at Koko for the 2nd time and she stormed it, absolutely beautiful. Some jenny lewis sans RK would be welcome too. I am enjoyed adele very much. Can i put in a bid for more album tracks please? And i'm desperate to hear more of the latest PJ Harvey on the radio too.

Just to add to the growing list of requests, can I stick in a shout for Peelie's faves, The Bhundu Boys?

I expected to have heard a bit more of them on the station and, ok, they are the more obvious of bands from the 'world' genre.....but they were absolutely wonderful and were possibly one of my first introductions to something away from the, equally superb, jangly guitar from those halcyon days.......

A week of early shifts meant that I haven't heard all of last week's shows, but what I have caught up with has been an utter joy.

I am with the posters on here who think there is maybe a bit too much of the live stuff, I appreciate that it's always been a feature of the show, since Janice's days, but nothing is constant but change, as 6 has proved......

Finally, Billly, cheers for the Imprints info, much appreciated.....

Oh aye, while I'm here, if we're having wine and malt whisky clubs - all very acceptable - we've got to have a bottled beer appreciation club.

Not just yer pale ales either, dig out those stouts and porters, start with O'Hanlons Ruby Port and Titanic Stout - bloomin' marvellous.....

    I'm only 36, honest........

Is it allowable for me to just like drinking lager and still listen to this show? Not any fancy kind of larger either - just Fosters and the like... Can't stand any of that real ale/dead rat rubbish!

And as for the washing up rota that's been mentioned; I have a dishwasher if anyone would like to pop the tablet in for me and turn it on, it would be appreciated...

adthedoor, I have to agree with some of those suggestions, up with the Pale Saints, and shoegazers in general and yes to more goth, new goth perhaps?

I love to hear Siouxsie and Bauhaus, but there are other gothy bands making good and interesting music to this day like Trauma Pet, Sinbeats, The Way of All Flesh, IAMX, Nouvelle Vague and so on that get very little radio play.

    Pretty please?

F.A.O. (and I do like using that acronym...) Bagsbunny...

Themetune (for the time being as still a chance it may be replaced, as someone mentioned it was a bit 'boomy' for that time of night... get over it!) is Intermission by The Webb Brothers.

Also, the Duffer theme, taken from 70's top mule and cart / I live in a shed / pipe smoking on national tv duffing, tv show, Out Of Town, is a piece of classical guitar music from the 1800's called Recuerdos de la Alhambra.

Both are readily available from online music download sites, should you wish to remind yourself of the show in your own time. Maybe you could even write your own intro speeches in a Gid stylee, but that would be a bit weird to be honest, best left to 'the master' (Hold on, what's Dr Who doing here?)...
