Devon indie rock band Muse have picked up two prizes at the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich.

The Teignmouth three-piece won the award for best headline act, as well as the gong for the best UK and Irish act.

Muse beat international stars the Foo Fighters, Beyonce Knowles and Justin Timberlake in the best headliner category. They edged out rivals the Arctic Monkeys, Mark Ronson and the Klaxons for the second award.

An estimated 80 million European MTV viewers voted for most of the winners of the different categories, but the event was dominated by North Americans.

The lads from Teignmouth arrived in Germany straight from Las Vegas, where they had been partying for Halloween.

Singer Matt Bellamy said on stage: "I guess this means Best Live Act or something.

"Last time we played Munich you guys f* rocked."

Described on the MTV Awards website as having a sound that measures on the Richter scale, the band have built a loyal following for their spectacular live show.

The website said: "If Muse sound like something from another planet when you whack 'em on your stereo, seeing them live is like going there with them.

"If you're sick of the oldies rattling on about Pink Floyd, get up and see their modern equivalent."

Many of the world's biggest stars came together in Munich for the event, first created in 1994 as a European answer to the US Grammy awards.

Musicians including Arctic Monkeys, Snoop Dogg, Avril Lavigne and Mika rocked the night away, before each taking away an artist's goody bag worth thousands of pounds.

Presenters included Joss Stone, tennis ace Boris Becker, Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba, model Lily Cole and Formula One star Lewis Hamilton.

Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne was named best solo artist, while her chart-topping song Girlfriend was voted most addictive track.
