Coming in on a wing and a prayer

Magnificent women in their flying machines are the subject of a community radio play based on a series of interviews with female aviators.

Women pilots are the lead characters in a World War II drama adapted for broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Devon.

Anywhere to Anywhere tells the story of the women aviators who were called upon to fly planes all over the country during the Second World War.

The play is based on a series of interviews with female pilots who formed a special unit of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) during World War II.

Some of the original interviews were with women pilots living in Devon.

Anywhere to Anywhere is adapted for radio by Sarah Welsh from an original play by Joyce Holliday.

"Joyce Holliday wrote her stage play with songs in 1985. Much of the dialogue was taken from transcripts of conversations with the women pilots who flew the planes for the ATA," said Sarah.

"I adapted the play in 1999 creating a new stage play performed by four women, a ladder and a parachute!

The radio play is a new version of this, but remains faithful to the stories of these amazing pilots."

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Devon production was performed by members of the Playgoers Society of Dartington Hall. The same group performed the original stage version in 1999.
