I was there when ...

Find out more about these incredible true stories from Cumbrian people who were caught up in extraordinary historical events. Five local people recall their first hand experiences of events which dominated the headlines in years gone by ...

When Kevin Fernihough ran a feature called 'I was there when ...' on his weekday lunchtime programme, he unearthed some incredible stories from local people.

Over the course of a week, Fern heard some quite remarkable stories from Cumbrians who'd been caught up in recent historical events.

Take for example Cris Wilson from Flookburgh who was on board The Herald of Free Enterprise when it capsized just outside Zeebrugge on 6 March 1987.

Donald Campbell's accident in Bluebird in 1967

The tragedy happened as the Townsend Thoresen ferry left Zeebrugge bound for Dover with 650 passengers on board.

The final death toll was 193 and the disaster had unfolded in just 90 seconds.

On January 4 1967 Donald Campbell was killed in his jet-powered boat, the Bluebird K7.

He was travelling at more than 300mph (483 km/h) on Coniston Water when the boat was catapulted 50ft (15m) into the air after its nose lifted.

Robbie Robinson from ConistonΜύ witnessed the event first hand and told Fern how he can still remember it clearly today.

Sue Hanisch from Sedgwick remembers 18 February 1991 when a bomb went off in a litter bin outside Victoria station.

The aftermath of the IRA bomb at Victoria Station

The bomb killed one man and injured many others, as the warning given by the IRA had not left enough time for evacuation of the station.

Sue says her life was saved by the man who eventually died.

A tragedy which happened in Cumbria on 22 October 1999 has made a lifelong impact on Shap resident Jean Jackson.

An RAF jet crashed into a building in the village, killing the crew of two and injuring a van driver.

Miraculously the jet missed the village itself.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ News reports on the Boxing day Tsunami

Finally, on Boxing Day in 2004 Brian Thanner from Anthorn and his family had an incredible escape from the Indian Ocean tsunami which killed over 200,000 people.

Brian tells the story of how he and his family were holidaying in Sri Lanka when the devastating tsunami struck.

You can listen to all five amazing stories by clicking on the audio links at the top RHS of this page.

Fern's lunchtime show is broadcast every weekday midday - 3pm.
