We have Blast off!

Welcome to Cumbria – God’s own county! Join me, this summer, as I take all you lovely lot on a journey showcasing just what Cumbria has to offer, and trust me, there’s loads of it.

I'm 18 years old and I've just finished my first year at Bournemouth University studying for a degree in Multi-Media Journalism, (and also, as my Nan says, a degree in partying).

The arty side of me came to life when I was around 12 years old. I got my first guitar as a Christmas present, a Westwood, I think – one of those guitar/amp packages. I took lessons at school and privately and suddenly found myself spending every free chunk of time playing on my guitar. Just for the record, I now play a Gibson Les Paul. It’s amazing.

Step into my world

I started to get interested in playing in bands, and after a few goes, me and my school friends started one - very cliché, I know. There were four of us in our band, Awol, and it was great. We were having the time of our lives. We started to playing gigs here, there and everywhere in Cumbria and played Maryport Blues, Silloth Beer Festival and the like.

Unfortunately, last year when I moved to Bournemouth to pursue the, ‘I want to be a journalist’ ambition, I had to leave the band. It was good while it lasted, although I haven't, and most likely never will, stop playing my guitar.

I’m also really into writing. You can do so much with words. If anyone watches Top Gear then they'll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Take Jeremy Clarkson, for example. Have you ever heard anyone churn out similes like him?

“It sounds like the God of thunder, gargling with nails. The Mercedes is a good car in the same way that I’m good, with a tin of beans.â€

That’s a classic Clarkson quote, but this is supposed to be a car review. If your car sounds louder than hell and is good with a tin of Heinz’s finest would you be pleased? Anyway, I’m getting slightly off track, back to me.

I love to watch live bands. I’m a self-confessed music junkie, but I’m also really into live comedy, stage plays, and festivals. If something’s live, then something can go wrong – I think that’s what I love about performing or watching something live. It’s a rush of adrenalin that I can’t find anywhere else.

Let's have a Blast

I found the Blast scheme while I was trawling the internet during a politics lecture at university. If my memory serves me correctly it was the British Constitution lecture, which in my defence, anyone would think of something better to do for an hour. It’s a good thing that the lecture was particularly boring, because otherwise I wouldn't be sat here typing this out for you.

I got involved with Â鶹ԼÅÄ Blast because Cumbria is often stereotyped as a boring, pensioner-ridden hideaway, with nothing to do. I’m about to change that.

Cumbria is host to an array of things to do this summer – all you need to do is get out there and get stuck in. I’m going to try my best to cover everything going on this summer for your reading pleasure.

If there’s anything that you'd like me to get involved in and report on drop me a line at, guy.little@bbc.co.uk and I’ll be there, rain, hail or shine.
