Books

The success of the Hitchhiker's books established Douglas Adams as a best selling author. In 1987, Omnibus followed Douglas on the publicity tour for his book Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.

Dirk Gently is a private detective, whose first case involved a horse in a bathroom, a sofa wedged in a stairwell, and Schrödingers cat.

Dirks' second outing, The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, involved Norse gods on the rampage, an electronic I-Ching generator and an interesting use for a hi-fi turntable.

Besides the two Dirk novels, Douglas Adams also wrote The Meaning of Liff with John Lloyd. This handy pocket-sized volume provides words for things that previously didn't have them. For example:

Ripon (vb.): (of literary critics) To include all of the best jokes from the book in the review to make it look as if the critic thought of them.
