Danny's future
Following on from Spoof (but with a somewhat bigger budget) Danny
returned to the horror genre recently for the tongue-in-cheek Shriek if
You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th - a film that lampoons the
Kevin Williamson style of horror movie.
"I am not particularly a fan of horror films," Danny admits, "but I can
get into any genre that is well executed. I think Halloween is a great
movie - really freaky. I think that the key to a send up is that it be
as funny as possible - end of story. That audience isn't really
emotionally attached to the characters, so the film lives or dies from
joke to joke. The hard part as an actor is to not try to be funny, but
to just play it straight. This is difficult because you are in a comedy,
so you naturally want everyone to think you are hilarious, but if you
don't play it really straight, you end up killing the joke."
Although nothing is set in stone, a return to Buffy during the latter
part season five seems likely for Danny. That is if he isn't otherwise
engaged of course. "I just got my first screenplay (Die Harry Die)
optioned with me attached to play the lead, so needless to say I am just
thrilled!" reveals a delighted Danny. He wouldn't even mind penning a
Buffy storyline himself. "I think my scripts would be much more focused
on Jonathan," Danny deadpans. "I think every episode would be like
Superstar. It would become redundant almost immediately, but it would be
great for my ego!" He may be teasing but you never know when we might
see him in the writing credits.
As we wind up our chat, I ask Danny what had surprised him the most
about working in Hollywood? The one thing he hadn't seen coming when he
set out to become an actor?
"I think I am really surprised by what an absolute emotional roller
coaster my life has become. I go from depression to elation all the time
- strange days, indeed."
