Danny's Cameos
Fans looked forward to seeing these little cameos and Danny's became a
very recognisable face. I wonder if that helped or hindered getting more
substantial roles in Hollywood?
"I don't know if it helps or hurts," Danny admits, "because I never know
if the people I am auditioning for are familiar with the show. The
auditioning process is one in which the actor gets very little
information about almost every element of it."
The auditioning process can often be somewhat unusual in itself and
Danny has experienced some odd casting calls.
"My strangest auditioning experience was when I was reading for a TV
show, and right when I started the audition, the casting director left
the room and yelled at me from the hallway to keep reading.
"So I am sitting there with the reader saying my lines while the casting
director is yelling from the hallway, ‘keep reading Danny, you're doing
great.’ By the time she came back in the room, I had finished the scene.
The next day I was told that I had a call-back for the director - it was
truly bizarre."
Towards the end of season three, Joss Whedon recognised Danny's
potential as Jonathan and gave the actor a more substantial role in the
controversial episode Earshot.
Having acquired the ability to read minds after being infected by a
demon, Buffy mistakenly believes that Jonathan is about to vent his
frustrations on the students of Sunnydale High School with the aid of a
rifle. In fact, Jonathan is actually contemplating suicide and, in a
powerful scene with Sarah Michelle Gellar, gets to show what it's like
to be overlooked and under appreciated in life to the point where you
finally snap.
