Belgrade Summer Events replaces the Arts Alive festival, but the new name doesn't mean a change in the quality of events - indeed this year's programme looks set to be bigger and brighter than ever.

The emphasis is on family entertainment and this year sees the focus move from small-scale fringe productions to a mixture of larger scale theatre and workshops.

Belgrade Youth Theatre will also be making their first appearance on the main house stage since 1998 with their production Five Princes and a Wedding, a collection of tales from around the world including The Tinderbox, by Hans Christian Anderson.

A day-long celebration of the arts, crafts and music of South Asia comes to the city with the Festival of Asia and the Belgrade hosts some cool jazz at the annual Jazz Festival - which will be headlined by the Stan & Clark Tracey Big Band, who will be appearing on the main stage.

The highlight of Belgrade Events is set to be Granuaile - The Prirate Queen, which will be performed by the 50-strong Macnas, Ireland's best known and best loved street theatre company.

The large-scale dramatisation of the legend of Grace O'Mally is directed by Coventry's Kathi Leahy, who was recently at the helm of The Wedding - the Shaskeen Theatre Company's Belgrade smash hit.

Performed in Coventry Cathedral ruins, Granuaile is a precursor to the Mysteries 2003.
