Shakti (meaning The Inner Power) is a tale of a mother's worse fear and trauma when her young child is taken away from her.

ΜύNarasimha and his ruthless gang
Narasimha and his ruthless gang
Nandini (Karisma Kapoor) lives a happy existence with her two dotting uncles in Canada. Soon she meets Shekhar (Sanjay Kapoor) and both get married. They have a son call Raja (Jai Gadwani).

The twist in their sedate life comes when Shekhar decides to take his family for a visit to India upon hearing about his mother's ill health.

Shah Rukh Khan and Aiswarya Rai
Upon their arrival, they are not only greeted by the Indian hot weather and crowded streets but a bus journey which turns into a nightmare.

They are attacked by a gang of dangerous men and Shekhar ends up baring the brunt of the beating. Nandini is badly shaken by the reception she has received so far in her motherland.

ΜύThe final escape
The final escape
However several unfortunate incidents later, they finally reach their destination but their troubles are far from over.

Nandini meets her in-laws, Narasimha (Nana Patekar) and her mother-in-law (Deepti Naval) for the first time. She soon discovers that whilst her mother-in-law is gentle and most welcoming, Narasimha is a ruthless and savage tyrant for whom killing is a natural way of life.

This is the way he lives and now he vows to teach his grandson, Raja, to become like him and take over his bloody dictatorship.

ΜύThe happy family in Canadajpg
The happy family in Canadajpg
This angers Nandini which results in her worse nightmare coming true - her son is taken away from her by Narashima.

Tortured, starved and imprisoned, the once calm and sophisticated Nandini turns into a wild tigress ready for a battle. She must now avenge Narashima single handily if she is to see her son again!

The only person on her side is an easy-going vagabond (Shah Rukh Khan) who is deeply moved by this young woman's plea for her captive son. He decides to help her to the very end. But will Nandini win against the ruthless army of Narashima? See Shakti for the answers!

Actor Shah Rukh Khan impresses in this thriller after a masterful and superfluous performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas. He has reaffirmed his position in Bollywood. Memories of the Devdas epic will flood the audiences' minds as we see Shah Rukh and actress Aishwarya Rai once again in a special dance number in Shakti.
