Top safety tips
Μύ
1. Store your fireworks safely

Store fireworks in a closed box, somewhere cool and dry. Only buy fireworks that have a safety mark BS 7114.

2. Keep pets indoors

Remember to keep all your pets indoors and close all the curtains and windows.

3. Think ahead and be prepared

Have a full bucket of water handy for any emergency. This can also be used for distinguishing used sparklers, simply by dropping them into the bucket.

4. Ask if you really need a bonfire

It's much safer to manage without a bonfire. If you do have one, make sure it's well away from your house and any trees, hedges, fences or sheds.

Only use domestic firelighters to get it going, do not use a flammable liquid like petrol or paraffin. Never throw a firework onto a bonfire.

5. Watch what you wear

Loose clothing can easily catch alight, so if you plan to handle fireworks, give your clothing some thought.

6. Let fireworks off one at a time

You (or another adult that you choose) should be the only person letting off fireworks and they must be let off only one at a time. And don't rush.
7. Follow the firework code

Light the tip of each firework at arm's length, using a safety firework lighter or fuse wick. Stand back well immediately after lighting.

If one doesn't go off, don't go back to it - it could still be live and could go off unexpectedly. Instead, at the end of the night douse it in water and bury it in the ground.

8. Check each firework's instructions

Read the instructions on each firework carefully (by torchlight, never with a naked flame) and follow each one properly, as not all fireworks are the same.

9. Take care with sparklers

Never give sparklers to children under five. Light them one at a time and make sure anyone holding a sparkler wears gloves. Put each finished sparkler into a bucket of water when they go out.

10. Don't fool about

Act responsibly with fireworks, never put them in a pocket or throw them. Throwing fireworks is illegal, with a maximum penalty of Β£5,000.

11. Don't mix bonfires and booze

Drinking alcohol presents a danger when there are fireworks and bonfires around. You could consider not having any alcoholic drinks until your fireworks have been let off.

12. Watch out for children

Keep children away from fireworks. Never let a child handle or light a firework. Even sparklers can be dangerous if unsupervised.

Make sure that children are aware of the dangers.
