If the organisers of the Godiva Festival, CV One, are successful in finding 2,003 people to take part in the procession, it would make it the longest ever as it would beat last year's record of 1,003!

Schools and charities along with community, sports and other types of group are being called on to join in and help make this year's event the best yet.

Long-standing tradition
Μύ
The Godiva Procession is one of Coventry's longest-standing traditions with its roots based back as early as 1678 and it was revived in its traditional foot-procession form in 1997.

This year, the fun takes place on Saturday, 7 June as part of the city's sixth Godiva Festival - a whole weekend of celebration, which includes concerts, a motorcade and other attractions.

The procession will begin at the cathedral ruins, winding its way through the city to the Memorial Park, which is home to the main festival celebrations.

The historical tableaux at lasy year's procession
The procession is split into three parts - civic, historical and general. Civic figures head up the procession, including councillors and the Freemen's Guild.

The historical tableaux then follow, including Lady Godiva on horseback accompanied by a host of mounted knights, played by members of professional stunt company the Devil's Horsemen.

A Heritage Lottery Fund grant won by CV One last year paid for four historical costumed tableaux, the Civil War, the Gunpowder Plot, The War of the Roses and Queen Isabella with entourage, which will appear in the historical
section again this year. New for 2003 will be a Victorian tableaux.

The final part of the procession contains all the other groups and societies who don't have historical or civic links, such as Cheylesmore Community Centre, who will be dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland and the
Coventry and Warwickshire Chinese Association.

A day of colour and music
Μύ
Individuals can also take part and do not need to have a costume. Charities are welcome to use the event as an opportunity to raise funds.

Procession organiser, Jane Wynn said: "The procession has grown year on year since we resurrected it in 1997 and is now very colourful and musical.

"We are hoping that more new people will join us for what is a fun day out and a great opportunity to promote a group or cause, raise money for charity or just feel proud of your city!"
