Hopes for 2012

To celebrate the anniversary of three years until the start of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Coventry & Warwickshire are looking to the future with young, talented athletes who have 2012 in their sights.

Adam Crinage is one of those young talented athletes; he plays wheelchair basketball for the Wolverhampton Rhinos in the Super League. At 21, Adam is young enough to potentially reach the next two, or possibly three Paralympic Games. Though he is out with a long term injury at the minute, Adam hopes to be back by Christmas, but will have to get the doctor's final say. This gives him just over two years to build up his fitness and secure his place in the squad for the games.

ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Coventry & Warwickshire's ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Blast sport reporter, Tom Phelan, spoke with Adam about his chances of making the squad.

Adam said: "It's put me back slightly because I haven’t had another year to train and to get better."

Confident

Having made the Great Britain squad before, Adam is excited at the prospect of playing at the London Paralympic Games in 2012, and having tasted the success of winning a silver medal in Instanbul with the 2006 GB Junior team, he wants to experience even more success with the senior team in the future.

When asked about Team GB's chances of making the podium Crinage answered with a confident, β€œoh yeah, definitely, without a doubt."

While it may come across as over confident, Adam assures us that the team have worked hard for it and they have every faith in the team's head coach, Murray Treseder.

Adam continued: "He’s done an absolutely fantastic job, and the sheer amount of training, we as a team are doing is a lot more."

Ade Adepitan

Ade Adepitan is arguably the most recognisable wheelchair basketball player, partly because he stars in ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ One advert and presents children’s television programmes. Ade has done a lot for the sport, making it more known, and Adam cites him as a player he looks up to - and one he has been lucky enough to play against.

With the Games coming to London, the amount of funding available to athletes has increased considerably. Adam is just one of the athletes benefiting from this surge in funding.

He concluded: "Since it's been announced, the funding has just got better and better compared to when I first started and there was hardly anything at all."
