Celtic challenge for charity

Eighty members of staff at a Warwickshire based company are going to row the Irish Sea for Children in Need... But won't be leaving their office...

A team at NFU Mutual in Stratford-upon-Avon are going to attempt the Celtic Challenge by rowing the distance of the Irish Sea - the equivalent of Aberystwyth in Wales to Arklow in Ireland - on rowing machines!

The event will take place on Friday, 14 November at the company's Head Office in Tiddington.

The Celtic Challenge - crossing the Irish Sea - is said to be the longest rowing race in the world and is approximately 145 kilometres.

There will be two teams with forty crew members - both trying to complete in the fastest time.

Wales and Ireland

The Wales team will be led by Keith Barrow and the Ireland team will be led by Andrew Spriggs.

Lindsay Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at NFU Mutual said: β€œEach crew member will attempt to row between two and four kilometres each. We plan to start at 9.30am on the Friday morning and hope to complete the swim by 4.30pm that afternoon.

"This really is going to be a team effort and will hopefully raise a significant amount of money for Children in Need."

Even the company's coffee shop will be entering in the spirit of the day by having Welsh and Irish theme.

Last year, they held a similar event for Children in Need when they swam the equivalent of the English Channel in the company's swimming pool.
