Cornish Landscape by Frances Watts

Inspirational Cornwall

Â鶹ԼÅÄ Cornwall's Afternoon Presenter, Emma Lloyd has recently featured writer in residence at Exeter University, Greta Stoddart, whose project has sought to find out how people are inspired and influenced by the history of where they live.

The university of Exeter's writer in residence, Greta Stoddart, started a project earlier in the year to discover how people relate to the history and heritage of where they live.

People were encouraged to write poems about how they responded to Cornwall's landscape and its past - whether it be our mining heritage, myths and legends or the beautiful seascapes.

Cornwall has inspired artists and writers for hundreds of years and its beauty has influenced the work of potter Bernard Leech, sculptor Barbara Hepworth and writer, Daphne Du Maurier.

Here are just a few of the poems Greta received that are being broadcast on the Afternoon Show with Â鶹ԼÅÄ Cornwall's Emma Lloyd……...

Underground by Jenny Hamlett read by Â鶹ԼÅÄ Cornwall's Martin Bailie

Stone by Roger Farnworth read by Â鶹ԼÅÄ Cornwall's Victoria Gould

An Goel Meur a Vernans by Pol Hodge

Inspired by the "Great White" spotted off Cornish coast in 2007

Goel meur a vernans, Great sail of death,

goel tewl heb y skath dark sail without its boat,

goel lowen yn-dann an dowr, a sail happy under the water,

ow helghi an moryow hwath. hunting the seas still.

Mar lymm avel gyw,ÌýAs sharp as a spear,

mar vras avel bugh,Ìýas big as a cow,Ìý

mar leven avel bulhorn,Ìýas smooth as a snail,

ow tos, ow mos avel lugh.Ìýcoming, going, like sea smoke.

Nyns eus mil moy skav, There is no animal faster,

nyns eus best moy krev, there is no beast stronger

nyns eus fella po fella there is none crueller or cunning,

ow rewlya mor, tir po nev. ruling sea, land or sky.

Dha benn yw 'vel seth,ÌýYour head is an arrow,

dha dhens kollelli, your teeth knives,

dha lost yw baner ankowÌýyour tail a banner of death,

ow nija saw ragos jy.Ìýwaving only for you.

Jynn rag down ha bas,ÌýA machine for deep and shallow,

jynn rag saw dybri, a machine just for eating,

jynn gwrys rag unnsel purpos; a machine made for one purpose,

ow kul hwath moy morveleydhi. making still more sharks.

A! Morvleydh, morvelydhÌýOh! Shark, shark,

gans kerensa goesÌýwith blood love,

dybrer bywnans ha gyllys....eater of life and gone......

morvleydh, morvleydh, spyrys loes.Ìýshark, shark, grey spirit.

THE BEST VIEW IN THE WORLD by Carole Buchanan

We've travelled far and wide to see

The world in its entirety.

From Oz to Timbuctu we've been,

So many superb sights we've seen.

But. oh the Joy!Ìý the sheer delight

Of coming home to such a sight

As Cornwall in her autumn glory;

Inspiration for many a story.

Wadebridge fair beside the river,

So beautiful it makes you quiver,

With the Camel sweeping through,

Down to Padstow and that view.

The Estuary when viewed from Rock

So picturesque it's quite a shock:

Nowhere in the world I've seen

Can match that sight - it's for a Queen!

STARS OVER COVE by Ann Stephens

(In memory of Tony & Peter)

Midnight stars shining bright,

Do tell us what you saw tonight;

Todden high? Winch-house still? Lovers kiss on Cadgwith Hill?

Crashing waves, smugglers caves? Far off boat; alone, remote?

Silvery moon so full and round,

Reveal to all the seas that pound those same old rocks which rugged stand

Just yards away from ravaged land?

And did you note the amber glow at windows varied high and low?

And therein also did you peep and see our young ones fast asleep?

Oh sparkling stars, so grand up high!

Do you recall in nights gone by the frenzied search of men 'til dawn,

Returning home dull and forlorn?

Did you weep too, as you looked down to see our loved ones never found?

Midnight stars shining bright,

Toiling each and every night,

Do tell us what it's like up there; such order and composure rare.

That velvet sky, the great expanse

That leaves us feeling quite entranced.

Oh bounteous gems of vast array-

Won't you forever close by stay?
