Cornish hedge

Proper Job

Children in Cornwall are learning how to build a proper Cornish Hedge. Master hedger and dry stone wall builder Richard Cummins is passing on his skills to the younger generation at his Stone Academy near Advent on Bodmin Moor.

The Guild of Cornish Hedgers has been formed to preserve the craft of Cornish hedging and Richard Boden Cummins - who is one of the guild's first members - been instrumental in training the next generation of hedge builders at his newly established rural craft-training centre, The Stone Academy, near Camelford.

Richard Boden Cummins explains, "The hedge is not only an important visual fabric of the Cornish landscape and archaeological heritage but it provides an important habitat for fauna and flora."

"When building hedges you know you will leave your mark on the countryside for generations to come, it is very satisfying and I hope the guild will attract more young people to learn this valuable craft."

Local schoolchildren has recently been given the experience of building their own hedges.
