Pupils from St Petroc's School in Bodmin

Taking to the Air

A school in Bodmin is gearing up to launch its own radio station. While this can be found in several secondary schools in Cornwall it is unusual to find students taking to the air in primary schools.

St Petroc’s Church of England School is challenging their 10 year old pupils in year 5Μύ to create exciting radio programmes in their lunch hours. The ICT co-ordinator at the school, Claire Chapman says the work will be mapped to the curriculum.

"The skills of producing the radio programme will be part of their ICT curriculum, literacy is going to come in with their speaking and listening, as well as drama through just putting on one piece."

She adds, "it will start off by reporting things happening in their classes and then develop to reporting achievements in the wider school environment. It is an exciting prospect for the children."

The radio station will broadcast from the β€œsurf-shack”, a quiet area near the library allows the children to sit at computers. The radio station will be broadcast inside school by streaming it on the web.

Naomi explains, "the students were obviously very excited about the prospect of becoming stars in their own schools. They came up with the some good questions to ask their headteacher including "what does he do all day" and "can we have seconds at lunchtime"!

"I was slightly taken aback when they asked me how much I earn as a ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Cornwall presenter! They seemed content to know it was probably a little bit more than their pocket money!"

The radio station hopes to go on-air at the beginning of November.
