A score of 11.27 points wasn't enough for Winter, who won his opening third round heat in style.

Winter dug deep to score a 7.77-point ride just forty seconds from the end of his encounter with Australian's Darren Rafferty and Jake Paterson and Euskadian Hodei Collazo.

But the England international was always chasing the pace set by Rafferty and Collazo, who earlier in the competition had put out Winter's Newquay team-mate Mark Harris.

Winter was awarded three points for his opening ride by the judges, followed by a 3.50 before ending the heat with a 2.43 wave score.

It gave him an overall total of 11.27 points and a fourth-place in the heat.

Winter, a past winner of the Boardmasters, will be disappointed with his performance in front of a home crowd. He ended the contest in equal 37th place and 650 ranking points.

A 7.83 and a 6.67 for Rafferty saw him to a comfortable heat victory and a place in the quarter-finals. Collazo did enough to take runners up spot and is also in the draw for the last 12 of the competition.

Former World Championship Tour surfer and World Professional Surfing tour representative Paterson was third with 11.47 points.

American Ben Bourgeois and Australian Adam Robertson are Rafferty's opponents with a semi-final place up for grabs.

Collazo, meanwhile, who is in great form is up against South American Marcelo Trekinho and South Africa's Royden Bryson.
