Flushing And Mylor

After a miserable July, the sun came out for the Flushing and Mylor Gig Event on Sunday 29 July. The calm sea made for perfect conditions for those taking part. See a photo gallery...

Flushing and Mylor Pilot Gig Club held their third club regatta on Sunday 29 July at Kiln Quay, Flushing.

Local gig clubs including Falmouth, Truro, Devoran, Helford and St Agnes had accepted the invitation to join Flushing & Mylor to celebrate the end of Flushing Regatta Week, providing a colourful spectacle of eight Cornish Pilot Gigs.

The Sunday provided a day of sunshine, flat water and light winds.

With gigs assembling on Kiln Quay Beach, the course this year was set for maximum spectatorship with the start off Trefusis point, heading out to West Narrows with a turn back to Mylor and a finish back off Kiln Quay Beach.

Helford River Gig Club celebrated five great results. Fielding crews in every race, the club stormed home to win five out of the nine events which were held on the calm waters of The Fal.

Capturing the action

"Our ladies have been coming on in leaps over the past season and so it's great to see them taking home a cup," says Helford River Gig Club chairman Simon Hill.

"While it's great that the club is doing so well on the score board, there are other achievements that we are just as proud of with three junior crews on the water and two novice members getting their first race today.

"Encouraging young people and newcomers into the sport is vital to keep it alive. Flushing and Mylor have put on a great event and we are really pleased to be here – it's always a brilliant way to spend an afternoon."
