Complaint

During this programme Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson, was described by a contributor as the leader of the English Defence League, prompting a listener to complain this was inaccurate as the League had been disbanded some years ago. Β The ECU considered whether the broadcast met the editorial standards for accuracy set out in the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

The ECU agreed it was inaccurate to describe Mr Yaxley-Lennon as such, but considered it an understandable mistake as he had published a number of posts before and during riots in Southport regarded as inflammatory, and Merseyside Police, in a statement, had described some of those involved in the events as people β€œwho identify as English Defence League”. Β The ECU took the view that the inaccuracy would not have materially affected listeners’ understanding of the matter under consideration, and that the overall impression given – that Mr Robinson, known for his connection with the English Defence League, had made claims about events in Southport – was duly accurate.
