Complaint
This edition of The One Show featured a report by the actor and writer Paterson Joseph about Ignatius Sancho, born a slave, who made his fortune in London and campaigned against slavery. Β A viewer complained the presenter inaccurately suggested there was no longer anything to mark the location of his grave in the former burial ground of St Margaretβs Westminster.Β
Outcome
The burial ground is now known as Christchurch Gardens and Mr Joseph was filmed there, where he observed: βThere's no sign of him here, itβs a real shameβ. The complainantΒ objected that, as there is a large information display at the site which includes a feature about Mr Sancho, this was misleading. The ECU accepted it would have been clearer had Mr Joseph been explicit in explaining his reference was to posthumous markers such as a plaque (as was seen in St Jamesβs where his shop was situated), or a tombstone, But in the context of the report as a whole, which sought to inform The One Showβs audience about a somewhat overlooked figure, it considered most viewers would understand Mr Joseph simply to be regretting the absence of a formal sign of recognition for the man, in the place where he was buried.
